The FAA is always hiring Air Traffic Controllers. They are severely understaffed.
It's good pay, no college degree required, paid training. It's also crazy hours (many facilities operate 24/7/365), high stress, zero flexibility, often has mandatory overtime because they are so understaffed. |
But Rs think that's the way it should be. No benefits; forced over time; no work life balance. it's capitalist paradise. |
Are you EFFING KIDDING? The billionaires are looting this country. The billionaires are the ones who own the companies and want H-1B workers at low pay to come to this country. Most H1-B workers are working for crap pay, because the middle men are making the money. POTUS is a billionare who hires illegal immigrants, let along legal H1B worers. Plus, Americans are not educating their children like other countries are. Look at the Chinese. USA will always need imported talent. But, yes. There is zero need to get H1B workers for mid level or low level jobs if that has been goin on. (Which I doubt). |
Your ignorance is showing. ATCs have potential early retirement at age 50, benefit from an enhanced federal pension formula, a government match to their TSP account, and excellent health insurance which can be carried into retirement. They can earn up to 26 days of vacation, earn sick leave, and receive paid holidays. https://www.faa.gov/atc-hiring |
They have to retire at 50 because the job is so stressful. And they need good health insurance to deal with chronic health issues brought on by the stress. This life sounds miserable, but that's what Rs what. They want to squeeze as much life out of you as possible, then discard you. Do you really think they are taking 26 days of vacation? Maybe sick days due to all the stress. https://www.npr.org/2025/12/07/nx-s1-5630388/air-traffic-control-is-stressful-this-former-controller-describes-the-reality-of-the-job |
No job and the inability to pay their bills is stressful and likely puts off retirement. |
Early retirement is optional. The job is no more stressful than many others which involve public safety, and nobody is compelled to do that kind of work if they don't find it attractive. But feel free to project your limited values on others who are quite happy to work harder than you evidently want to, in return for roles which are meaningful and impactful, and for reasonable compensation and benefits. Not everyone aspires to nothing more demanding than driving for Uber. |
So what’s the starting salary for ATC nowadays? And after 15 years on the job? |
| DHS and local police are hiring with signing bonuses! |

NYT did a cool reel this week about the jobs report and the apparent job growth. If i remember correctly it revealed that we lost jobs in every sector but healthcare/companionship -- where jobs were added. And the "companionship" tag on there is telling. It includes in the healthcare category the folks with zero healthcare training who are getting paid minimum wage to sit at home with elderly people who can't take care of themselves.
So if you want a job -- apply for that one. Very, very easy to get hired. Don't expect more than minimum and don't expect benefits. |
Oh wow so air traffic controllers are government workers ....wow I didn't know the people making sure my place doesn't collide with another are government workers wow OMG |
you're fine coz it'll be done by GPT or Grok for a fraction of the costs before you know it |
That’s weird. We’re adding jobs across the spectrum in my sector of manufacturing. Not just my company but the whole ecosystem. |
McDonald's in my area starts at $20/hour |
