What’s the deal with Amherst?

I think my kid is having a wonderful time at Amherst but think that the experience at similar schools would also be excellent. Each school has something special… For Williams, for you and your kid, it might be the fact that it is more remote…. For Amherst, for my kid, certainly it is the community that is created at the school along side the ability to interact with other schools in the consortia… whether it is classes or parties….All of these schools are special places and a kid is lucky to be at any of them.

People were doubting Amherst’s recruiting ability because of last year and now it’s doubled its diversity percentages.

Agreed. My oldest is a freshman at Amherst with close friends at Williams, Swarthmore, and Middlebury. All happier than they could have hoped and loving college for different reasons.

Nope. There is nothing to prevent them from soliciting applications from FGLI students in certain zip codes. The application does not ask for race, and there are no interviews.

For racists, the presence of any students of color at all is prima facie evidence of unfair admissions, they believe only whites can be qualified and chosen fairly.

Admissions are "fair" to them when everyone is white or asian.

Amherst has never put their finger on the scale, they have a long long track record of diverse admissions AND being the #1 or #2 ranked LAC every single year for decades.

The percentage of white students literally went up, but I guess that doesn't matter to you, right? You just don't want to see Black and Hispanic people succeed.

We (conservatives) believe in private property and non governmental interference…right? Amherst can do whatever it wants.

We were all breathlessly waiting for the insight of yet another sanctimonious blow-hard.

I want to see everyone succeed - on merit.

In terms of academic rigor and warm and friendly community, Amherst is the real deal.
I’ve been very impressed. That said, the small size and low-key environment are great for my kid, but would not be ideal for many. We’re encouraging DC to study abroad junior year, to get some sense of the larger world beyond their idyllic little bubble.

This is not true unless equal efforts are geared towards attracting FGLI students from white zip codes (there are many). Racial demographic zip codes data is out there; it does not matter if the race of the individual is unknown if the algorithm is racially biased.

I feel like this same post on Amherst comes up every six months.
