What’s the deal with Amherst?

True for every school.

Nope. There is nothing to prevent them from soliciting applications from FGLI students in certain zip codes. The application does not ask for race, and there are no interviews.

This is not true unless equal efforts are geared towards attracting FGLI students from white zip codes (there are many). Racial demographic zip codes data is out there; it does not matter if the race of the individual is unknown if the algorithm is racially biased.

Amherst HAS targeted white-majority FGLI zip codes, resulting in a large increase in rural student representation.

My unpopular opinion as an Amherst parent is that the consortium was nearly useless for DD, and I don't really see much interaction between the colleges unless it is occasionally for a cool speaker.

Everything else is tier 1 at Amherst.

Funny how small government folks are happy to have ridiculous government overreach when it benefits them.

This really clarifies the critiques. It seems Amherst is too busy giving out financial aid and POC scholarships and needs to dedicate more time to resources and building quality academic departments. How disappointing for a once great institution.

This is exactly what a great institution should be doing. Money for financial aid rather fancy buildings? Fantastic.

Meh, most top schools do both. Sounds like a cop out.

Really? Name other LACs that are need blind for both domestic and international students and don’t have legacy admissions

No, they only rubber-stamp admission for rich athletes (who are often legaciesj to comprise 40% of their freshman class to pay for it. How noble!

Okay, so not real facts only you OWN facts

Amherst is 35% athletes. Freshman athlete admission proportions have to be much higher due to post-freshman year attrition. Facts. Had Amherst cut their athletes in half, and retained legacy, it would have helped non-wealthy families way more. Facts. Numbers don’t lie.

True, numbers don't lie. More than 20% of the freshman class is FGLI, and 76% of students receive financial aid.

Numbers don’t lie, but you seem to. 76% on financial aid did not pass the straight face test: you need to lie better.
It is 61%. Here’s the cite: https://www.amherst.edu/news/news_releases/2025/september/welcome-new-mammoths?fbclid=IwY2xjawN0q8xleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETE0Z2w1Wng0UG1kZWg1QWo0AR6yppbTFLOw3a9Jjrrwkhulho_jpDsq4E02zTDJI909FAcmnWELuYb_aAHOTg_aem_sCThdWQgj60AKO-GWQ8Lpg

Interesting, my DD (at one of the other colleges), uses it all the time.
