Who cares if it was distasteful? She should not be in prison for daring to say them.

you can also go to jail for saying that Hitler was right on your t-shirt in many countries. Lost of germans actually believe this is true, but they cannot say it. Every country doesn't have the first & 2nd amendment. I think that this woman (im muslim) should've been left alone b/c she is just being dumb and honestly from the Sunnah of the Holy prophet there isn punishment for blasphemy- there is no punishment for saying "blasphemous" stuff in Islam this is some stupid shit we picked up from Christianity but I find it amusing that the daily mail gets SOOO offended when Muslim or just non-white countries punish expel for breaking their laws. there was another article about a girl who was going to prison for having cocaine (!!!) in Dubai (!!! what the off did she think was going to happen- it is a no tolerance for drugs policy state) and the DM was SOOO offended. If people fleeing the Taliban for helping the USA can be put in jail for not having the right papers in the USA then people who have cocaine can go to jail and people who have the wrong message on their clothing for that matter. It's all writing right- the writing in the t-shirt was wrong, the writing on the visa was 5 years, not 10??

You dont get to come here, enjoy all of the protections of the US Constitution, and then make fun of her for fighting to have the same rights in her own country. Why did you leave if you loved being a second class citizen so much? DO BETTER.

you know what- mea culpa. I did not realize that she was Moroccan- good for her. I support people fighting for these same protections in their own countries. I DO NOT support people going to other countries and not respecting the customs and laws.

I also think what she said is stupid & won't actually change the needle amongst her pwn people- she could have said something substantive instead. I mean Allah can't be a lesbian, she could have said Allah loves lesbians and that would have made an actual point. This way she just seem like an a&&hole. the above example about hitler was just the most hateful and vile statement I could think of off the top of my head that would still be protected speech in the USA but not protected speech in France/germany. someone within a culture fighting for rights will always have my support but someone advocating fr US style freedom of speech is an outlier b/c no-one else has that much leeway in speech. MLK wasn't just spouting off some nonsense- he was actually advocating for something substantive and real and promised within the context of his culture and country. Does she just want freedom to say whatever stupid shit b/c pretty much the USA is the outlier in having that right- there is no other country that has the same freedom of speech laws that we enjoy. maybe start with baby steps since most people think that our bill of rights is horrific nonsense, even our allies. I live in europe right now and people roll their eyes so hard when they hear an american talk about blah blah amendment. the majority of people don't admire our freedom of speech laws, they think our bill of rights is dumb.

Who gets to decide what's stupid shit and what's important, meaningful speach? Just because you found this particular message dumb it doesn't make it so. She is fighting for her right to say it in the first place. Considering the international attention she brought onto herself, I'd say she was fairly effective.

Plenty of Moroccans are sick of living the way they do. A good friend of mine, a man, is going through the asylum process here in the US because he was discriminated against so much for not being a Muslim.

I grew up in Europe and you're full of shit that they roll their eyes. Europeans very much value and excercise their freedom of speech. But also, she is fighting not just for the freedom of speech but for the mere right of certain peopel to exist.

I agree with all this. But the way she is fighting is by committing a jailable offense and then going to prison. That's the whole point, and the only way to draw attention to the issues. So really, it's the people on here who are complaining about her sentence who are undercutting her. She went to jail and got the attention she wanted.

+1000

Why is she wearing a T shirt to offend a religion? That’s not free speech.

It is free speech. But there isn't free speech in Morocco. Which was the point of her protest.

Same thing could happen here - just give the Christofacists a little more time.

Exactly. I’m appalled by all the morons saying “that’s the law. What did she expect.” So if they passed a law tomorrow here in the US that women have to cover up, those moron would just do it? It’s lunacy.

Um, we do have laws about covering up. Try waking around with no clothes on and see what happens. Seriously, the enthocentricity here is just nuts. Different country, different rules!

I see it went right over your head. We don’t have different rules for women in this country. She has every right to protest that and try to change it in hers.

Ok but there are better ways to protest right? Wearing an offensive shirt is just attention seeking and unclassy. Why not work with organizations that can lobby for change or start a grassroots movement. No, she deliberately chose to take action that is illegal. She was well aware of the consequences so now she has to accept that.

Tell me you know nothing about Morocco without telling me. She already started an organization.

Good for her! She’ll have 30 months to really focus on it while in prison. You really want me to be outraged but 9 pages in and I’m not.

So I guess this poster does not believe that free speech is a human right?

Most countries do not provide for free speech. America is fairly unusual. Even our hat, Canada, doesn't trust their citizens with free speech.

So now we're ok with not having free speech? Or is it ok for them but not for us? I'm confused.

That is fairly obvious.

Most Americans don't want free speech. They want to be able to arrest you if they don't agree with you.

I know, you're simply too dumb to be outraged. You don't see how someone fighting to have equal rights is noble and important. You don't value human life or human rights. And yet, you're indignant about it. It's the pinnacle of stupidity.

No wonder Trump won with people like you voting. I'm guessing, like most of his voters, you will care a WHOLE lot when it happens to you. Until then, you people are incapable of empathy or critical thought.

The Moroccan woman has the same rights as a Moroccan man to criticize Islam. She doesn't have the same rights as a US citizen because she's not in the US. Why is this hard to understand?

You make no logical sense. At all.

We are expressing outrage at the Moroccan government for jailing her for simply wearing a provocative t-shirt. We can condemn oppressive regimes and support those who stand up to them.

The Moroccan government would have jailed a man for doing the same.

You want Moroccan women to rights not guaranteed by their government because women in America have those rights. That doesn't make sense.

They probably would have jailed a man for doing the same. That's why she is fighting for them too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibtissame_Lachgar

Not just because we have them here, but because everyone should be able to criticize the government in charge without being jailed. Are you seriously telling me that those rights do not make sense?

Most Western democracies do not tolerate criticism of the existing government. For instance, parody of government officials is illegal in Germany.

The ignorance in this thread is astounding.

Yes, she broke the law and the sentence is horrifying. What's more horrifying is the complete lack of human rights in Morocco, but especially women's rights. And you are just shrugging your shoulders.

A lot of those people went to jail. They expected to - it's the price of civil disobedience.

This woman went to an Islamic country and wore a shirt that she knew wold inflame many of the people who saw it. Either she did it to be deliberately provocative and further the cause of human rights, in which case she expected to be jailed, and a 30 month sentence isn't a surprise. Or she thought it was a funny joke, haha, and is a complete idiot. Either way, there are many real injustices in the world that deserve more attention than this.

Even if I take your word for it, so what? I would champion a German woman fighting for that right too.

Morocco is not a developed country by anyone’s definition- economy, crime, education system, SES, legal judicial system, capital markets, infrastructure-wise, labor market, consumer market, etc.

Emerging markets are developing markets.

Islamic monarchy government are also exactly that, an unlimited power, religious government (Islam) run by a bloodline King, who is also the chief of military.

So tourists: F around and find out.

Do you not know anything about the three major religions or government systems in the world?
The latter were taught in 6th grade, the former is a core liberal arts class in college (Christianity, Islam and Judaism).
