If that were true, this post would not exist. |

That's tough, and I can see why you're upset. Having said that, Pitt is the clear choice. It's an amazing school, and your daughter would thrive there in the biomed program.
Yeah, she's definitely leaning towards Pitt right now - Friends have told us that their BME program is great. We're planning to make a visit soon to get more of a feel (and we've never been to the city itself).
Hi OP - I am the Pitt-Michigan PP from this recent thread. I have some sightseeing suggestions and thoughts about CMU on that thread. Maybe your daughter might be the rare student who wants to take a class up the street. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1266599.page I would suggest that if your daughter is still very unsatisfied with her outcomes that you work the WL for Cornell and CMU as best you can. Several Cornell colleges offer sophomore transfer options to their WL people who hang on to the bitter end. And, if your daughter is at Pitt, she can move up the road to CMU and still keep her friends from first year at Pitt. Pitt and CMU are different social ecosystems mainly due to convenience but are not that far by free bus or walking if it is important to do so. You might want to look at this Reddit thread about transferring to CMU for some general comments about the process in 3 schools (business but also engineering and architecture). https://www.reddit.com/r/cmu/comments/13m2g6o/transfer_student_with_tons_of_questions/ The top kids from Pitt do very well at getting grad school placements and the really top ones do well in national and international fellowship competitions. So I would take into consideration whether your daughter might prefer to be a "big fish" at Pitt or a "small fish" elsewhere. Some people are internally motivated and some require the toughest peer competition possible.[/quote Thank you! Definitely lots to think about. She's definitely been a "big fish" at her school but might want more of a challenge. |
So in 3 years she can compete again and hope to get into Columbia Engineering of the last 2 years. In most 3+2 programs, the Engineering Part (ie Columbia) is NOT guaranteed. You still have to be accepted (and most are not). I still think you are a teenage troll with a lot of free time right now. Because nobody who knows they want BME as a major is going to attend W&M in hopes of getting into a 3+2 program. They would be applying to schools with an actual BME program. |
Pitt has rebanded from a commuter school in the 80s to become second to JHU for biomed (tho public) these days (who knows how long that will last). They love students from TJ in VA. There could be different reasons, one could have come down to your geographic location and the HS your kid attends. Are there many students who applied to those same or similar colleges? |
I think this is a troll.
OP writes, Results: JHU EA - Deferred -> Rejected John Hopkins doesn't have Early Action they only have Early Decision I and Early Decision II |
What prevented an ED application to JHU? |
I don't think I made it clear, but W&M was more of a "shotgun" application - She went on a tour with a family friend who wanted to apply there and loved the campus + students. And Columbia has been one of her top schools for quite a while. |
She did apply to JHU ED - Did I accidentally write EA in the OP? |
Pitt, VT, and W&M are all excellent schools. She will 100% find her people.
VT's admitted student days are April 14–18 and 21–25, with more info here: https://www.vt.edu/admissions/undergraduate/visit/high-school-spring-break/schedule.html W&M's Day For Admitted Students is April 12th, with more info in her portal. Pitt has an admitted student day on Monday, April 14th. She should go to all three and see where she connects the most with the students and faculty. |
I can see that, that one surprised me a bit as well. |
Yes, I clearly meant to write ED. She applied ED2. |

It's a total gem of a school. If she's dead-set on the BME piece of things, it might not be exactly the right fit, but if she's flexible, it's a really incredible place, and could be wonderful. With those stats, did she get Monroe, by any chance? |
Yes she did! Was a nice result in the middle of all her disappointment. |
She should skip W&M |
