Norwood: What do you love? Not Love?

You didn't actually address PP's point, which in fact made a lot of sense. Keeping the name "chapel" to describe the tradition of an assembly is not significant, nor is it unusual among schools that once had a religious connection but no longer do.

Well, perhaps the next step should be to get rid of the name chapel and simply call it morning assembly.

It also started out as an Episcopal school and decided many years ago to become a non-religious school. It would have been more consistent to drop the Lord's Prayer at that time, but better late than never. Eliminating it now leaves only one potential source of confusion, the use of the word "chapel." That may stay or go. I doubt many people feel strongly about it.

Many pps also miss the point that schools can change - they are not wedded to tradition. There was no "constitutional requirement" to change - duh - but it is completely in the right of the board to change it, which is what they did, making judgements about what was best for the school. I don't agree with everything the board does, but it is in its rights and purview.

As with other traditional institutions that attempt a change, I suspect people will keep this issue alive for a long time. Get over it.

And there are plenty of non religious schools in the area. You knew what you were getting into.

Actually, I didn't know about the deep Christian traditions. That is why I didn't complain, and my kids went along with it. I accepted it as a downside, along wtih much that was good. But it doesn't mean I can't prefer when they are gotten rid of, and strongly prefer when I see the nastiness and intolerance of the Christian supporters.

OP, one reason that the parents might not seem intellectual is that some are there because they like the Ritzy feel. And to be honest, it does feel like a country club, so go figure.

Yeah-- you can drop the tikes and scoot right across the street to "The Club."

If they are not saying prayers in Chapel, then maybe they can cut it shorter and get the kids into class sooner. The Chapel does not seem to be doing much good wrt bullying, they pray then go bully?

Side note... Not sure if this is still the case... but years ago when I attended to Madeira which is not religious... we had "chapel" twice a week but did not recite the Lord's Prayer. There was a cross in the chapel too. It all worked out.

What are the school's plans and the parent community's expectations with respect to the "Christmas pageant?" It does not appear to be sustainable since it will not be feasible to give close to equal time to other religious stories/traditions. "Chapel" also causes confusion as to the nature of the gathering and I assume eventually will be changed (after Mr. Ewing leaves if not before) to an "assembly."

7:03 Be careful. You will be accused of bullying the bullies and your DC will be the ones to get in trouble.

Why did the board vote in April and just announce now? The process could have been more transparent for such a small school that prides itself on character development.

OP, to answer your question, I wish the academics were stronger. No worse than Seven Locks or Potomac ES, but many parents have said no better, ...but the environment is superior, ...and all the special are done very well.

This is the last year the school will hold the large-scale Christmas pageant.

The strategic plan that initiated the review was adopted in April. The changes were approved recently.

Your answer does not address lack of transparency.
