Norwood: What do you love? Not Love?

Anonymous
Were there for some years, so not a hot off the press view (but perhaps some perspective).

Love:
- quality of middle school teachers
- physical plant
- ability to be flexible with students (some track record of this in math, apparently some in foreign language). However, has to be handled "delicately"

Don't love:
- anti-intellectual environment, which probably reflects environs and preferences of a lot of parents. Not that school tries to promote this ... but still true.

- administration that doesn't like open discussion, keeps parents at arms length unless you are chosen one on the board. Head of School is a bit of a hermit.
- persistent reports of bullying that is not handled well (good luck to the new head of LS)

Is the bullying happening at the LS or MS?

The experiences I'm directly familiar with were LS.

This is surprising given the school's current stance on bullying. When were your children at Norwood?

I have children in the LS. There was bullying last year that was not handled well. From what I've seen so far, I think the new LS head will take the issue more seriously, but we'll have to see. I wish more parents would step forward and express their concern about bullying to the administration. Unlike 12:12, I've found the head of school to be open to discussion and quite responsive.

Would anyone care to add any color on the bullying (even just grade)? I have two kids in lower school and have not heard about it, but that may be because it did not affect my kids directly. Bullying is one thing I definitely worried about in choosing a school, so I am just trying to learn more and make sure I stay on top of this. We love Norwood and the head of school.

It is a few boys who have a way of ganging up and picking on other boys and sometimes girls. They are relentless.

Interesting, we had an issue with bullying at their camp this summer. I chalked it up to having high school counselors and having a changing group of kids each session. DC had never experienced this at his regular preschool.

Please provide grade(s), thanks.

Really? You know of specific cases in all grades?

Ok, thanks. I bet it was those boys I saw wearing ripped jeans at recess.

This poster is not a Norwood parent and has no clue what s/he is talking about.

I was being facetious.

What do people mean by "bullying?". Kids ganging up to pick on one kid? Individual acts of nastiness by one kid? Only emotional, or physical too? It's hard to tell from the word what behavior is encompassed.
