Serious question for MAGA - how do you not see the rise of authoritarian oligarchy?

100%. It’s all fine when it’s happening to others.

I’m not MAGA. I was one of the Democrats on here begging Democrats to look up (of course nobody did) and who knew Trump would beat Biden, let alone Harris. I think I’m one of the few Democrats posting here that regularly listens to Rogan, Kirk, etc. I’m a Democrat because I am pro-labor, pro-working class (people the Democrats used to care about), but feel alienated from this current identity-focused iteration of the party. Of course I voted for Harris because Trump is a traitor, but I have no love for the current Democrats.

Here is what you don’t understand. The deep red MAGA believe we were in an authoritarian oligarchy under the Democrats. They believe that Democrats used the pandemic to destroy small businesses with their closure and shut-down orders, and to consolidate power into the hands of powerful Democrat donors. They do not believe they receive any benefit whatsoever from government agencies, mostly seeing them as arms of the oligarchy that destroyed small businesses and the education of their children during the pandemic. And these feelings run long and deep: most of them view the pandemic business and school closures as targeted extensions of what Democrats did with NAFTA.

They also view the DEI and identity-focus of current Democrats as explicitly anti-working class. The language of DEI is inexplicable and a clear class marker — no one who isn’t part of the wealthy oligarch class uses incomprehensible terms like “lived experience” in daily conversation — and they feel that it is used by the oligarchs in charge to weaken and isolate them.

So, from the point of view of MAGA, there isn’t a change. That’s what all the hyperventilating out-of-touch posters in DCUM do not understand: the MAGA think we’re already in an authoritarian oligarchy. So, if we are already in one, it might as well be run by someone who doesn’t convey how much he hates them like the Democrats do.

Do you have cites on any of these claims, including how the GOP is more pro-working class? In fact, can you provide an example of one policy drafted, passed, and implemented by the GOP over the last 125 years that has been for the benefit of working families?

FWIW, we are in the top 5% net worth in this country and I do not know a single person in our social groups who uses the term “lived experience.” Ever.

You may benefit from a little more reading on what constitutes oligarchs because what you are discussing here misses the mark by a wide margin.

Sigh. DCUM elites are so slow sometimes.

No, of course Republicans don’t help the working class. And few MAGA voters believe they do, so Democrats like the PP just sound like they are slow and condescending to the MAGA. You can spare the lectures.

MAGA believe we were already in an authoritarian oligarchy that doesn’t care about the working class under Biden. Therefore, if we were already in an authoritarian oligarchy that doesn’t care about the working class, you might as well pick the head of the authoritarian oligarchy to be the guy who doesn’t telegraph over and over how much he hates you.

To break it down further, this is what MAGA believe:

Biden and the Democrats are authoritarian oligarchs who also have a personal hatred for working class people. They look down on working class people, including their food, their religion, and their sports.

Trump and the MAGA Republicans are authoritarian oligarchs who don’t care about working class people. But they don’t mind having a beer with working class people and are happy to sit and watch the WWE together.

From the MAGA point of view, who will you pick? The authoritarian oligarch who hates you for who you are or the one who doesn’t?

The GOP did their propaganda well. They are very good at accusing the "other side" of what they want to do, selling it hard, and then coming in and doing it themselves.

MAGA can "believe" this all day long, but it is based on lies and it is destroying the country.

So almighty Dem who sees all--what do we do? How do Dems make the truth sexy enough for MAGA to bite? We know they don't operate based on reason and facts. It's all emotion. How do we dismantle the hatred based on lies. They are standing by while our country, our hard won democracy, is destroyed and watching like zombies as we become an autocratic nation ruled by a demented felon and his oligarch friends.

I don't want to live in Russia, Argentina or Hungary.

What do we do?

With the bolded, you show you still don’t get it, and as far as I am concerned, don’t actually want to fight for American democracy. And for the record, I agree that Trump is a major, major threat to American democracy. I think he wants to be Putin, which is terrifying.

But it is not a lie that Democratic pandemic policies destroyed working class businesses. It is not a lie that working class children were most harmed by school closures actively supported by Democrats. You cannot — if you actually want to save this country — refuse to acknowledge that Democrats have caused serious harm to the working classes with their policies. And you have to recognize that many of their favorite planks (identity, student loan forgiveness, etc) come across as extremely elitist.

So what do we do? Well, most Democrats won’t like it, because it’s going to require humility and admitting profound errors. I don’t actually think the party in its current form can manage it. But, the only way to fight back against any oligarchy is with strong labor and working class. That means abandoning fringe identity issues and focusing on true bread and butter labor issues. For instance, for God’s sake stop having trans musicians that mock Christianity open for Bernie Sanders. Instead go to the churches, embrace the religious. Make the tent bigger. Push out anyone who divides, and hammer home the basics: economic security, fair wages, strong working and middle class, good education. Walk away from useless identity politics. Example: men in women’s sports is something most of the country thinks is outright evil and unfair, and just another sign of how the Democrats are elitist oligarchs themselves.

And yes, that means the laptop classes will have to get their feelings hurt. They will have to admit their policies are wildly unpopular. They will have to admit that they’ve abandoned the working classes, and that their focus on things like DEI was done to preserve their role at the top of the Democratic oligarchy ladder.

I don’t think the party can do it. But the answer to an oligarchy is always strong labor and working classes. That’s it. Anything else is just window dressing.

Wait up wait up. Why are democrats getting blamed for the pandemic that happened on TRUMP’s watch? wtf. Business closed down because of him. Schools closed because of him. It is wild that people blame Biden for that. When Biden was elected, vaccines became available and things opened up. Yes, vaccines, that TRUMP promoted himself, as a means to get the economy open again. wtf happened to people’s gd brains.

PP here. Truthfully, because most people could understand and get behind spring 2020 shutdowns. There was a fair amount of support for it across the political spectrum.

But over summer 2020, the BLM protests and riots occurred. That caused a fracturing of people who had supported distancing, some closures, etc., because a lot of more conservative and independents thought that if it was safe to riot, so to speak, it should be safe to send kids to school. The riots weren’t criticized by Democrats for the most part, if anything they were encouraged.

So then you have a situation where Democrats are pushing for schools to remain closed, and continued shutdowns and limitations on businesses, but also supporting protests and rioters. The Democrats also started to voice their support for vaccine mandates for a vaccine nobody knew much about. This all happened summer/fall 2020.

At that point Republicans, I think realizing they had a long-term political winner, started just taking a step back. They let the Democrats plunge forward with pushing for continued closures, vaccine mandates, etc.

And now, years later, Democrats are tarred with deep anger that remains (especially in the working classes that had livelihoods and the education of their kids permanently destroyed), and a perception that Democrats were on the side of authoritarianism with respect to Covid.

I actually think it the BLM summer hadn’t happened, the political perception of the Covid policies would have been a lot more muted.

It isn’t this simple though because RFK looks down on their food waaaaaay more than any other politician.

Trump turned it into a PR war and won. He acted like a blue collar worker to get the votes and will stab them in the back the way he did his contractors. He wasn’t able to get far in his first term because he was surrounded by politicians. Now the tech bros and Christian right, and fringe health people have found him and are playing him (and us) for all he is worth.

I am less scared about all of it because as these things go, these groups will eventually have huge schisms, it is a matter of how much they destroy before the schisms happen.

Your reading comprehension is off.

I’m not blaming the Democrats for the pandemic. But I sure as hell am blaming them for the unnecessary vaccine mandates for kids. It was LA and NYC that started the push to mandate KIDS get a COVID vaccine to attend public school. And at the time, it was an EUA vaccine for kids with zero data to prove that is was necessary.

And it was the Democrat jurisdictions that kept schools closed for much longer than the Republican jurisdictions. Not sure if that was the teacher’s union or what?

It was the Democrats who saw it fit to trample over our rights in the name of ‘safety’. It was the Democrats who censored information in order to keep the public scared and terrified.

When you pull over for an ambulance do you think about your right to drive or do you do it understanding it is an emergency situation?

I saw the vaccinations as this- an attempt to deal with a health emergency

Don’t even bother. These b’s homeschool or send their kids to parochial schools anyway. They just can’t stand that anyone else has nice things. That’s ALL that any of this about.

I teach Kindergarten and can explain adult concepts in friendly terms pretty easily. ;) They probably haven’t thought about greater good in a while. Most of us don’t have to as adults because we live in a plentiful society can construct our little worlds without having to sacrifice a ton. Sometimes though, we are all asked to sacrifice for the greater good. Taking a fairly safe shot didn’t seem like a huge sacrifice to me at the time to help get the world going again.

Oh please. What was so awful about Biden?

Maybe it was when he fell on his selfish arrogant elderly face in 2024 and gift wrapped an easy election victory gift for Trump??? You and the rest of the MAGGOTS loved Biden because you knew he'd collapse and give The White House back to Trump. I despise Biden and I despise Trump even more.

Kamala didn’t lose because Joe Biden was a disaster. He was fine. He should have bowed out sooner, a strategic mistake, but not something that justified any informed voter choosing Trump. They chose him because they LIKE bullies. Because they see themselves in him.

I don’t know what we do about that.

Something is off with you. Vaccine mandates are nothing new for public schools.
They never mandated flu vaccines.

Because they didn’t need to. Whether you want to believe it or not, Covid was killing a lot of people in 2019 and 2020, and then, after vaccines, it wasn’t. We have mandatory vaccines for a lot of things. And frankly, let’s just stop pretending your kids even went to public school.

There has never been mandate for vaccines that do not give sterilizing immunity. Covid vaccines are not childhood vaccines. Stop lumping in a shot that neither stops transmission or prevents disease.

So there’s your answer. They don’t care. It doesn’t bother them. They’ll just deflect to some unrelated grievance.

We don’t care because we already lived in an authoritarian society during the democratic run pandemic response.

Get outta town. No one is listening to you.

Unfortunately these ding bats swung the election.

The awfulness of Trump swung the 2020 election. The awfulness of Biden swung the 2024 election. Anyone suggesting that were equal primary causes of the 2020 and 2024 election outcomes are just idiots trying to divert blame from where it should be which is squarely on Trump and Biden.

Worst presidents ever, back to back! Do better people!

Yes, Biden was "fine".. lol. What was it you liked best? The 40% approval rating? The 3 yearly press conferences he could muster up the courage to do to explain his ongoing commitment to fund endless wars? His throwing his party and country under the bus by pretending to seek a second term and then bowing out 3 months before election day so that Trump would have an easy victory?

Biden was a disgrace. His only redeeming quality was being a better option than Trump. We could have beaten Trump in 2020 with any bumbling circus clown; I just don't understand why we actually had to choose a bumbling circus clown.

Sorry, truth hurts.

It was not killing children, with very, very rare exceptions. So forcing children to have a vaccine that didn’t confer any protection was authoritarian. The vaccine also didn’t stop transmission so it wasn’t protecting others.

Who cares, it saved millions of lives and allowed us to get back to normal. Trump shut us down in the first place and then let Dems take the L. You’re a fool if you voted for this guy because of vaccine mandates. You know you can’t get an abortion for an ectopic pregnancy in some places now right?
