DC giving 50 percent discount on traffic tickets to bad drivers, so long as they're poor

+1. Our lawmakers always seem to care more about the impact on criminals and not the victims.

Bullshit narrative.

Breaking traffic laws is optional, taxes are not. Big difference. DC should lower the fines, which are too high, not create a two tier system. For those that can't afford the fine, create an interest free payment system.

We need to decriminalize vehicular manslaughter committed by anyone making less than $40,000 because rich people are the worst.

This is extremely melodramatic. You’re not being treated unfairly if someone who makes less money gets a discounted ticket. Are you also being treated unfairly because people who make less money pay lower taxes?

They pay more taxes because they often lack the deductions that are available to the more affluent. Where did you get your education? DCPSs?

Some lower-income people pay higher taxes (or a higher rate on their income) because they lack deductions, but at this point, the standard deduction is pretty high, and anyway, in the aggregate, people who make less money pay less in terms of absolute dollars in taxes than people who make more money. My evidence is, I pay more in taxes now that I make more money than I did when I used to make less money, even with similar deductions.

And anyway, what point are you trying to make? You think the people on here who are whining about lower ticket fees for lower-income drivers are right?

DC should increase the fines based on wealth. 1-2% of gross income.

Name a major city in the United States that is more criminal friendly than DC. We'll wait.

14 year old driving an ATV down the middle of the street? No ticket.

Scooter blows stop sign at 40mph? No ticket.

Bicyclist, with children on back, no helmets, plows through intersection despite not having right of way? No ticket.

Poor driver, doing 60mph in a 25mph? 50 percent off their ticket.

Nonpoor driver failing to sit at a stop sign at an empty intersection for a full three sections, with bumper hanging over crosswalk? $100 ticket, doubled if not paid in 30 days.

Yes, this all sounds very fair now.

Traffic enforcement is all about 1. Raising money so our elected leaders can give it to their friends and 2. Making political statements about which groups of people the city favors. It's not about improving public safety.

This is a real slap in the face of law abiding citizens at a time when dangerous driving is at an all time high in the city.

No. It’s just you.

I ask myself this every time I see ppl walking their dogs on private property=trespassing. Letting their dogs do their business on school yards, etc. Or walking their dogs without a leash. It happens! People are going to push the boundaries just enough. So long as it fits their needs and the repercussions aren't that bad or no one sees them do it.

False - low income people barely pay any income taxes. They pay payroll taxes (and get back lots more than they put in) and sales tax.

No rich people pay about 9-10% of their income. Poor and middle class pay 25-48% when all taxes are included

This is so completely wrong that it's kind of hilarious. The poor pay on average nothing because of the earned income tax credit. The rich pay about 30 percent. Everyone else is somewhere in between, depending on how much they make. The more they make, the more they pay.
