How would be at a safety if they didn’t get in anywhere?

My 1580 SAT, 4.6 GPA was completely shut out last year. Spent about six months on the couch smoking weed and playing video games. He gained about 40 pounds. I finally told him to get a job so he works at the Taco Bell. This year he got into JMU but he only wants to take a couple of classes at the community college so he has more time for weed, video games and Taco Bell. He says he doesn’t know why we made him work so hard in high school and prefers his new lifestyle.

Must be a troll/joke post. If not, absolutely parents are culpable and should've made the kid apply to more than 10-15 schools.

I blame the parents.

Extremely surprised at Northeastern. Did you submit a 1400 or something? They hate submitters that are below median.

Safe to assume 50% of acceptances are below the median. It’s math.

Ummm.
Northeastern chases SAT scores like it's crack.
It's not looking for fit, it's trying to elevate its prestige through higher average SAT scores.
It is a good safety school for a well statted out kid.
Only about a third of Northeastern admits submit an SAT score.
Another 1/9th submitted an ACT score.
The upside is that you are going to be going to school with other driven talented students that lost the admissions lottery.

1560 uva in state. WL or rejected every other T25. Asian male. Loves uva!! 2023 was the hardest graduation year for our high school for anyone without hooks

Wow!! This process sounds terrifying.

PP, I am glad your child is happy at UVA and with those stats, it truly the other schools' loss!

Not at all. My DC is in middle school and this process is much different from when my DS and I applied to school. We now have a few years to both prepare and readjust our expectations

Disagree - it's not a safety for anyone.
Disagree - Northeastern looks for fit, in other words, students who are happy to attend and stay.
It's evidenced in the retention rate - https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/freshmen-least-most-likely-return

Agree - they mostly like high stat kids.
Strongly agree - "The upside is that you are going to be going to school with other driven talented students that lost the admissions lottery".

I am surprised he can’t find a serious peer group, considering my child has a very accomplished peer group at a lower ranked state school honors college.
