The Washington Post rankings are heavily influenced by the Post’s circulation numbers. They’ve so reduced the number of sports reporters there that it’s a certainty no one there has seen more than a couple of teams play. |
The 10,000 number is just high schools grades (9-12). The opt to pay tuition as opposed to going to the free public high schools. And while graduates of Catholic K8’s make up a large percentage of the kids at Catholic high schools, these schools receive many, many applications from public schoolers from all areas. These are people who do not like the hand they’ve been dealt. And the academics are just part the motivation. |
Every Friday night they do live reporting of like 5 of the best games. So, that's 10 teams each Friday they are actually seeing. Seems like their rankings are pretty accurate. SJC #3 beat Friendship Collegiate #5 by a score of 14-6. Riverdale Baptist in PG county is ranked #4 and smoked Good Counsel. Spaulding is ranked #1...any reason they can't play Spaulding? That would be a competitive and I am sure well-attended game. |
I had a family member who was a sports reporter (local teams) and he told me there was very little science involved and lots of spreading the wealth to the different areas. |
| He was working at the Washington Post (to clarify the above post) |
Are you trying to claim Spaulding with multiple 5 star, Power 4 recruits is not actually the best local team? They likely would spank SJC this year. If Riverdale Baptist crushed Good Counsel are you claiming a game against SJC wouldn’t be a good game? |
Just look at the ratings overall. See how many times all the circulation areas are represented. MoCo teams with gaudy records are highly ranked, but these teams would be non competitive with those from the stronger conferences. |
Who cares. It's clear there are enough non-conference local private schools (and some public) that would be far more exciting games vs. a completely crap school from Buffalo that they beat 42-0. |
“Many” is relative. That could be 2000 families or 10K. The point is you don’t know. So stop trying to make a point on the backs of public school families with data you don’t have. Some families are fleeing public. Some families have always planned to be in private for HS. Some families have never been in public. That’s the reality. |
Husband is an SJC alumni. We knew a number of kids who went there from my son's class. My son with dyslexia did not get in because they did not have enough slots in the Benilde program for kids with LDs plus the program has "fading support" which means less support year after year. Other friends kids went there and loved the big school with all the activities. One graduated and was recruited to play soccer at Columbia - biology major. The other was recruited and plays baseball at Notre Dame. Other we know did no sports and ended up at MIT. Three kids we know left after freshman year because they were not into sports. One went to School Without Walls, one to GDS and one to Jackson-Reed. A lot of the social life revolves around sports and sporting events, though there are plenty of other things to do. In hindsight, we were glad our son did not get in. First, he wouldn't have gotten the support he needed and then, while he was a decent sports kid, the overall social vibe would have excluded him. However, SJC is ethnically diverse, has strong academics and a very loyal and generous alumni. The science labs are what you would find at the college level and same for sports facilities. GL in making a choice - and don't miss the required entrance exam is you want to get into any local Catholic high school. https://adwcatholicschools.org/high-school/placement-tests/ The Placement tests are Saturday, Dec 7 or 14th, 2024. |
Where did you wind up enrolling your DS? |
Riverdale Baptist is legit this year because their best players are the athletes that got kicked out of St. John’s for various reasons. |
Stop. Multiple St. John’s football coaches were fired for smoking weed and players expelled. |
| SJC is the backup school when you don't get into Visi, Gonzaga, G-Town Prep and Stoneridge. Everyone knows this. |
OR your first choice school if you dont want to go to those schools. |
