Read above. It's already been announced at schools there won't be one. If there's inclement weather, it'll be a normal 2 hour delay and/or snow day. Maybe read before posting next time.

They should be prepared to make up the day then on 1/29

That it would be the ideal solution and extend the quarter to that day. It will never happen though.

Don't teachers have to get the day for grading and planning at some point though?

There has been one day of school. My kid has been at home trying to learn what is being taught at school. Can’t teachers also use this time productively?

Stop pretending you're the boss of teacher's and how they should be using their time. If they were given instructions to do so, then yes. But again, you are not in charge so stay in your lane.

DP. Of course, parents are not teachers' bosses and should respect that boundary. At the same time, surely you see the irony of saying teachers need an extra day for planning if they end up having 3 snow days this week. It's certainly not parents' role to tell teachers how to use their time, but it is most assuredly not a good look for the school system.

I'm the PP and I agree. It's just really annoying to read posts like that where parents seem to think they dictate teacher behavior (and I'm not even a teacher, just the daughter of one) MCPS should absolutely have done something like that but they didn't. Most teachers probably used the time wisely where having school or a half day on 1/29 shouldn't be an issue.

Sure, and many do. But teachers are also expected to accept late work until the last minute of the final day of school, so we will certainly be getting a lot of late work at the last minute. We still need that grading/planning time at the end of the quarter no matter how productive we have been on snow days.

Pp here. I have a lot of respect for teachers. I just am annoyed that my kid is receiving emails that tests will go forward on schedule whether class is held or not. Also, tests have not been graded even though they were in December. Doesn’t help kids study for the upcoming semester exams.

There won’t be any virtual tomorrow.

The funny thing is this was obvious yesterday to any ES teacher given the logistics and lack of planning but MCPS can't figure it out until a day later than everyone else. Just like it was obvious Tuesday night to anyone who had seen the state of some of the school parking lots that they were not going to be ready to open on Wednesday. Totally predictable as of 5pm Tuesday but it took over 12 hours for MCPS to figure out the obvious.

Then why are students getting zoom links for tomorrow?

There was only one for DD early this morning for Health, and the teacher said "just in case".

Why is it an issue? It’s a school day.

It’s forecasting snow. We have limited snow days.

The county seriously needs to start handing out tickets to homeowners for bad shoveling. Especially on corner lots. I was driving around at lunchtime and some sidewalks in the neighborhood were not shoveled at all or were so badly shoveled that they might as well not have been. The snow stopped over 72 hours ago, it's really not acceptable.

Yes, the work we are forced to accept way past deadline is the issue. Before the pandemic, it was never a problem for me to submit grades the day before they were due. Maybe two or three students had a legitimate reason to turn in work on the last day. Now, counselors and admins tell teachers to accept work that is 8-9 weeks late. It’s not required by the grading policy, but it is expected and your life will be made miserable if you take a stand.

Asking a teacher to pull an all-nighter to grade 70+ pieces of late work by the end of a professional day is one thing. Asking them to pull an all-nighter to grade and then teach 5 classes is another.

We don’t have sidewalks so kids have to walk in the street.

Completely separate issue.

But very similar. A virtual day is a terrible idea because so many kids won't show up, and we also know that virtual is not appropriate in many cases (e.g. kindergarten). Teachers will hate it and parents will hate it. But it allows MCPS to meet the 180 day requirement.

Demanding that teachers accept work past the deadline from any student is a terrible idea, for so many reasons. Teachers hate it and many parents do as well. But it helps MCPS inflate grades.

MCPS centers itself as an institution in all decision making. It is not about the students and/or the teachers and/or the families.

It's school hours and you are here? You've now had a few days off to do catch up.
