Thoughts on Davidson?

Davidson College is more in line with its overlap schools: Wash & Lee, Williams, Bowdoin, Rhodes, & Duke. (Other overlaps are Swarthmore, Amherst, & Middlebury).

Davidson is big on Greek life and eating houses.

Do you have a map to publish? Ven diagram? You seem to have all the files, so I'm asking, can you share?

The biggest difference is size. Davidson is really small, around 1800. BC is one of the “unicorn” size (not too big, not too small) at 9500. No Greek life at BC.

Davidson is closer to 2,000. Get your facts straight.

Ok 1950, so an additional 50 kids per year. Funny you think that is a difference maker, still very much a small lac in a small town.

Small town? It’s located less than 30 minutes from Charlotte, one of the fastest growing cities in the US. You really need to learn to use Google. #Facts

Davidson has a population of 15,000. As you pointed out the nearest city is Charlotte, about a half hour away.

DP. Look on a map, especially something like Google satellite, and see the surrounding area. Davidson isn’t in the middle of nowhere. Yes, there are true urban campuses in the middle of a large city and true rural campuses totally isolated from the world. Davidson is neither.

Rhodes seems out of place in this list.

My D24 is anxiously waiting on a decision from Davidson. She would have applied early, but we need significant financial aid so need to weigh aid packages when the time comes. She was part of their fly-in program so is very hopeful despite the 14% acceptance rate last year.

She wants a small school w/top academics and a strong student experience in a warmer climate that is near "stuff" and Davidson checks those boxes. She said Davidson felt far friendlier and welcoming to students of color than the New England campuses she visited. It did not feel Southern to her. Most of the fly-in students were not from the South. There are a few frats for guys and eating houses for women but at least the eating houses are self selected with no rush process. And parties are open to the entire campus. She calls it Greek-lite.

She found the Davidson campus quite pretty and felt large for 2000 students. It's proximity to Charlotte is a big plus. She learned that most students do take advantage of the city for concerts, sporting events and internships. Plus she adored Davidson's Lake Campus on Lake Norman that is quite the student hangout on those warm Carolina days. If she gets in and we get a good aid package, she will likely be a Wildcat next fall.

Everyone had their pronouns, there was a very visible LGBTQ presence (signs for events). Perhaps it still has some affiliation with its southern prep roots but it seemed A LOT like a typical New England LAC that leans left. I was quite surprised to be honest.

Please, please, please, someone share that this is not true.

The future is here.

You need to understand that your ilk is a dinosaur.

Catch up or you will be left behind.

Ha. Nope. And I guarantee I'm younger than you are. It's a political thing, not an identity thing. Literally none of my group from college, childhood, work.... no one uses pronouns.

That's for the cringey losers. It gives them something to belong to because they couldn't fit in anywhere else.

You keep being a loser and I'll keep being normal.

How do you not use pronouns? How do people refer to you without pronouns?

The traditional pronouns - he / she - work just fine for me. I am not going to be socially shamed into calling a person “they” or “ze” or “mx” or whatever other gem of asininity rolls down the pike.

He has zero interest in most other SLACs---would not be caught dead at Haverford (aunt went there). Other interests are Richmond, WF, UVA (plus safeties).

Gross. Are you all republicans? Liberty sounds like his vibe and yes, there are great parties there for the “pre-professional” crew.

Just think how much better this country would be if we didn’t have banks, doctors or attorneys!

Much better! We’d die intestate of something minor before our kids are grown, and hide our money under the mattress.

Did your DD get in?! We just did a tour of Davidson and DC LOVED it. Checked all the boxes and will likely be applying ED.

I think it’s the norm at most colleges these days. I work in an academia-adjacent field, and just about every email I get from a professor has their pronouns in the signature block.

That's because they've all been lemming-shamed into it, just like they have into "DEI statements." I'll give the silly-ass pronoun fad another 5 years, max, until it fades away into well-deserved obscurity like "Afro-American" and "college coed"

I'm guessing that the President of Georgetown has to be Catholic, and the President of Yeshiva University has to be Jewish. They are all colleges affiliated with a particular religious tradition. Davidson is welcoming to all students, regardless of religious, racial, cultural background.

Though my student graduated almost 10 years ago, Davidson likely still retains the study hard party hard dynamic that comes with having D1 athletics and some semblance of greek life in Southern school. Haverford has a much more low key student life and would be the better environment for an introvert IMO.

Granted I grew up in the northeast but believe Haverford has a stronger academic reputation than Davidson.

Yes, you think that because you grew up in the Northeast. People in Atlanta or Raleigh/Durham or Charleston don't think that.

Anonymous wrote:Geography/weather aside, how does Davidson compare to Colgate? Thanks.

Colgate seems to have a more toxic bro culture.

More pre-professional/less intellectual.

Worse location.

This is right on. I have good friends who went to both schools.

I think they might have done away with that rule.

I know trustees can now be any religion, which wasn’t always the case

Dp, Everyone thinks that because it’s true.

I am from the west, not the northeast or southeast. In my circle, Davidson and Haverford are both well known. Davidson is viewed more favorably on every front -- academics, campus, ranking, culture (and obviously sports).
