Sorry, I have to call troll. Senior year of college after a cushy summer internship and a six-figure job offer secured in August is the furthest thing from a rat race. And last summer would have been fun in New York City or Boston or whatever fun city with tons of friends and peers making good money. OP's alleged DS has been coasting since at least August 2022. And quite literally would have just returned from spring break!

...but he has wanderlust? Yeah, right. Wanderlust is for idle workshy women and layabout bartenders. Striver grinds with six-figure finance or MBB job offers would be painfully bored to go be idle for a year while all their peers bank $100k, make connections, earn promotions, and move forward with life.

Our youngest is at a very selective college with male friends going into finance. These are highly ambitious and highly competitive kids. They are handsome, personable, and very smart. Senior year is smooth sailing because they have great six-figure jobs line up and they all have $20,000-30,000 in their pockets from their summer 2022 internship, plus a signing bonus. The last thing these kids want or would do is go run away to travel to be lazy layabouts for a year after graduation. These kids are risers, a year off would put them a year behind. The personality type OP is claiming her kid has doesn't mesh with the post. This is a troll.

The last time OP posted this thread in the college forum, she said it was programmer job at General Dynamics. That’s a 9-5 job; not much of a grind. $103k is far lower than what kids in IB make now.

LOL do you know how many hours investment banking interns work? There is zero time for “hanging out with friends” while you’re interning in that field in NYC.

Kids going into tech aren’t super ambitious striver grinds like consulting or finance types.

Taking a year off after university is very normal in many countries. I did it and travelled solo in Europe and North Africa for 7 months. So did my friends. It didn’t derail anyone’s career trajectory. I funded my own travels and supported myself when I returned. Honestly, I feel super sorry for the kids of some of the posters here.

This is what happens when you push your kids and don't let them breathe. I wanted to do a gap year, parents said no, I burned out, dropped out, and everyone was upset. I eventually returned, finished and have a thriving career but perhaps it wouldn't have been such a painful lesson (in that moment) if they had let me ease off the gas for a minute.
