I guess if you are not sure if your child can hack CS degree then UVA makes sense. But if your kid wants a more prestigious CS school, pick UMD. |
So rankings aren't important unless UVA is ranked high. That's the message I'm getting here. Also, UMD has tons of restaurants, too, and probably more diverse ones than UVA, which is in the middle of nowhere. UMD is also much easier to get to DC. Stating that there is a train to DC from UVA as if this is a plus for UVA over UMD is laughable. Do you even know where UMD is? |
OP here. Both UVA and UMD are great schools (ranking or not)
Also I believe salary, career opportunities in the future won't be a big difference depending on which direction you are heading for, how hard work you are inputting during these 4 year colleges. I am really concerned about is which CS program will benefit or fit the interests my child needs. UMD: AI and 3D graphic design are strong UVA: Some core engineering courses involved under BSCS, not for BACS Thank you everyone for the input, I will show them to my child, in the end of day, my child is going to decide himself!!! |
PP, stop arguing. It's not a good look. It has been established that UMD is better for CS but UVA is better overall. Better as in rankings in both cases but also of course it is individual preference. There is no need to bicker back and forth like you are doing. You sound an awful lot like the Tech booster, perhaps you are one and the same I dunno, but this thread should be over and done right now. Go to UMD if the kid wants CS and likes the school. If they like UVA, they are not going to graduate unemployed. |
OP you're awesome. I appreciate your wading through this nonsense post and actually getting some valuable info out of it. Good luck to your DS! He truly can't go wrong no matter what he chooses. |
UVA may be better for a white kid. |
If you're "in VA" then UVA doesn't cost anywhere near 46k. What are you talking about? |
Engineering does cost around that |
I'm not a tech booster. My kids don't even go there. But I think it's hysterical that UVA boosters are now saying that we shouldn't argue about rankings, and then at the next sentence you state that UVA rankings is better overall. LOL |
who like being in a bubble in the middle of nowhere. |
UVA not close to "Better overall". I think this is a meaningless statement, like "Orange is better than red". If I were forced to choose one that was better, UMD has more highly ranked departments, does much more research and does a better job of serving the needs of its state. Your last two sentences are true, though. |
You’d know if you were in the field. |
Getting a degree does impact their lifetime earnings but not necessarily where if someone is bright and talented. Both are excellent schools. . |
+1. UMD s more diverse, if that is important to you. |
Those two things are not established. They are assertions usually based on some ranking. |
