Do CS grads from UMD make more money than CS grads from UVA? The answer is no it is pointless to have this discussion.

Overall, yes, actually, they do.

Do CS UVA grads make more than CS VA tech grads? If the answer is no then why pay $$ for UVA when VTech is so much cheaper?

According to statistics they do and yes it does matter where you go to it has an impact on your lifetime earnings.

Ok. statistics are based on those who self-report so many don't self-report. We'd never report that kind of information. Both are excellent schools and OP should be proud. The decision should be personality based off the campus and what the school has to offer.

Then any metric that looks at earnings is questionable.

No, both are not excellent schools for CS. Only UMD is T20. UVA is not. That makes it fine, but not excellent for CS.

Some people like urban areas, and some don't. So why would UVA be better when [b]it's in the middle of nowhere?[/quote

1) UVA is a great value when in-state Virginian
2) UVA is ranked 25 by USNWR for best national universities. UMD is 55.
3) UVA is ranked no. 3 for public universities in America. UMD is 19.
4) Charlottesville is a great town - lots of fun things to do. Great restaurants. Easy to get around. Easy train to D.C.

So if your child might change majors (mine did), go with UVA. The math is tough, BTW.

I guess if you are not sure if your child can hack CS degree then UVA makes sense. But if your kid wants a more prestigious CS school, pick UMD.

So rankings aren't important unless UVA is ranked high. That's the message I'm getting here.

Also, UMD has tons of restaurants, too, and probably more diverse ones than UVA, which is in the middle of nowhere. UMD is also much easier to get to DC. Stating that there is a train to DC from UVA as if this is a plus for UVA over UMD is laughable. Do you even know where UMD is?

OP here. Both UVA and UMD are great schools (ranking or not)

Also I believe salary, career opportunities in the future won't be a big difference depending on which direction you are heading for, how hard work you are inputting during these 4 year colleges.

I am really concerned about is which CS program will benefit or fit the interests my child needs.

UMD: AI and 3D graphic design are strong
UVA: Some core engineering courses involved under BSCS, not for BACS

Thank you everyone for the input, I will show them to my child, in the end of day, my child is going to decide himself!!!

PP, stop arguing. It's not a good look. It has been established that UMD is better for CS but UVA is better overall. Better as in rankings in both cases but also of course it is individual preference. There is no need to bicker back and forth like you are doing. You sound an awful lot like the Tech booster, perhaps you are one and the same I dunno, but this thread should be over and done right now. Go to UMD if the kid wants CS and likes the school. If they like UVA, they are not going to graduate unemployed.

OP you're awesome. I appreciate your wading through this nonsense post and actually getting some valuable info out of it. Good luck to your DS! He truly can't go wrong no matter what he chooses.

UVA may be better for a white kid.

If you're "in VA" then UVA doesn't cost anywhere near 46k. What are you talking about?

Engineering does cost around that

I'm not a tech booster. My kids don't even go there. But I think it's hysterical that UVA boosters are now saying that we shouldn't argue about rankings, and then at the next sentence you state that UVA rankings is better overall.

LOL

UVA not close to "Better overall". I think this is a meaningless statement, like "Orange is better than red". If I were forced to choose one that was better, UMD has more highly ranked departments, does much more research and does a better job of serving the needs of its state. Your last two sentences are true, though.

From a local employer perspective, we do not offer more or less salary/options based on where someone went to school. We will offer more if an applicant has specific skills we need. Equal skills from GMU, UVA, or UMD (or others) all get the same offer. We are not FAANG and are not doing web stuff.

anything particular about 'web stuff'? since you specifically brought it up

You’d know if you were in the field.

And yet where someone goes to school does impact their lifetime earnings. This is a fact.

Getting a degree does impact their lifetime earnings but not necessarily where if someone is bright and talented. Both are excellent schools. .

Those two things are not established. They are assertions usually based on some ranking.
