Wrong. Plenty of middle class and wealthy people live in actually vibrant cities around the world. DC just isn't a "world class city." Remember when that was the goal? We never made it because some morons shed idiotic tears for the Barry years. Well there you go. DC is back to sucking now. Congratulations? |
If you don't think they have crime and filth in those cities, then you don't know those cities very well. |
Ha! Pray tell, what is the per capita murder rate, carjacking rate, etc. in those cities compared to DC? |
Those who sell to gentrifiers make money. Those who hang on to their properties and sell when prices are up often obtain financial advantage not available to them otherwise. And if they keep living in their property, then their QOL goes up too. The only issue would be replacement of formally affordable businesses with the yuppie high cost groceries/eateries/shops/grooming etc.. |
| We need even more development and tax revenue in DC. The crime stats are already shooting up again, let's not go backwards to the bad old days when DC was the murder capital of America. |
|
Nothing - DC needs growth. Every city needs growth and development. It's a net positive. There is never a perfect solution, but growth and development positively impacts the majority of its residents.
DC has come a long way in the 40+ years I've lived here. |
Murder rate is driven by idiotic American gun culture. More guns = more violence no matter what the NRA tells you. |
You have to be kidding me. Last month two friends of mine flew into Paris and took a taxi from CDG into the city. While they were on the highway near the Stade de France in bumper to bumper traffic, a group of motorcycles zoomed to their taxi surrounding it. Two men broke the glass to the back seats and grabbed their luggage, purses and bookbags (basically all the stuff they had in the back seat with them). Then they punched the women in the face and zoomed away. Police think the taxi driver may have been in on it. You think Paris doesn't have crime? Are you high? |
| I help prevent gentrification by avoiding buying property in urban areas. |
I would never live in Hong Kong under the Chinese government. I'd rather have more freedom, but you do you. Also, Paris and London aren't that far behind DC. Several towns in France and England also rank higher than DC. |
| Gentrification rules. I literally do nothing to prevent it. Is there anything I can do to further it? |
Send your children to the local public school, whatever it is, and get really involved in it to improve it. |
I already do! You know what would be hilarious? If someone ran on a “pro-gentrification” platform for city council. No joke that would be incredible. “Like good coffee, nice schools, less crime, dog parks, and the resulting impact on property value? Vote for me.” |
+1000. |
You're right, London police wouldn't do anything if marauding ATV gangs were racing around Buckingham palace. And the murder rate in Paris is definitely higher than DC
