The Biden administration turned down a request for federal disaster assistance from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine in the aftermath of the train derailment in the state earlier this month that led to a large release of toxic chemicals.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) told Ohio's state government that it was not eligible for disaster assistance to help the community recover from the toxic spill, Dan Tierney, a spokesperson for DeWine, told Fox News Digital on Thursday. Tierney explained that FEMA believed the incident didn't qualify as a traditional disaster, such as a tornado or hurricane, for which it usually provides assistance.

"The DeWine Administration has been in daily contact with FEMA to discuss the need for federal support, however FEMA continues to tell Governor DeWine that Ohio is not eligible for assistance at this time," DeWine's office said in a statement earlier in the day. "Governor DeWine will continue working with FEMA to determine what assistance can be provided."

It’s called “the law” but we all know that is a foreign concept to partisan trolls.

Yes, Norfolk Southern is supposed to pay for relief and recovery, not FEMA. Just like BP, not the government, was responsible for paying for the Deepwater Horizon spill.

Norfolk Southern was reportedly going to just pay $2500 for affected property owners.

Meanwhile, sit back and relax? Good thing none of your family lives there.

It’s the law. EPA is doing its job. NTSB is doing its job. But for major environmental incident the corporate polluter has to be required to pay for the relief and compensation.

That takes years, Einstein. That’s why we pay FEMA to immediately jump in.

This, from FEMA website:

"Any occasion or instance--such as a hurricane, tornado, storm, flood, tidal wave, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, fire, explosion, nuclear accident, or any other natural or man-made catastrophe--that warrants action to save lives and to protect property, public health, and safety"

How can this disaster not qualify, but funeral services for Covid 19 are covered?

FEMA website: "If you are covering the cost of a COVID-19 funeral, FEMA may be able to help."
"You may qualify for up to $9,000 per funeral for expenses."

Thank you. The biggest environmental catastrophe in American history absolutely qualifies. Residents say their pond water has turned rainbow colored. What’s wrong with this administration? Has environmental concern suddenly evaporated?

Biggest environmental catastrophe in American history! Says who?! So foolish.

All you conservatives who want a weak federal government, why are you complaining and criticizing? This is your dream scenario. The railroad corporation at-fault is in charge of the site with their puppet Governor covering for them and telling the feds to stay away. Your guys begged for this and made it happen.

Huh, Biden faiths down requests for disaster assistance

So we have an inept head if dept of transportation who is letting our railways and highways crumble. And now we have a president refusing assistance to Americans who need help. Maybe I’d the citizens of Ohio identify as Ukrainians the Biden administration will actually get up and do something?

Absolutely disgusting. Of course Biden is just sticking up for his buddies in the rail industry - which is why he busted up a strike last year

Dewine refused assistance. Biden offered him “anything he needs” days ago.

Relax, according to Mayor Pete, we have three derailments a day!

It’s sheer evil to refuse to allow FEMA to help those poor people in a crisis of this magnitude. We’ll all regret it soon enough. There are many Amish farmers in that part of Ohio.

There are guidelines for dispersing money, Ohio hasn't done its job yet.

And...I thought you all wanted a limited Federal government. This is a corporate fiasco, let the corpoation take care of it, right?

You all keep asking where Pete is and complaining about Biden. Pull yourselves up by your bootstraps.

“You are eligible for FEMA assistance when you have problems that aren’t covered by third parties,” said Tierney. “The system is set up so taxpayers are the payers of last resort.”

Everyone knows that lawsuits take years to settle. We pay FEMA to jump in for immediate support.

Funny how both Joe and Pete were so entrenched in our rails. Heck, I was there when our Transportation Secretary did a huge media event at my local Amtrak Station in Old Town, Alexandria. He’s oh so proud of our rail infrastructure. What the heck happened to all our rail infrastructure investment? Where did it go?

I’m sorry but I will take the word of the actual proper officials than your “everyone knows” fuzzy claim. Maybe that’s why we can’t agree. You trade in innuendo rather than facts.
