S/O - any disappointing tours?

Of course there is, but you have a teenager, right? You have seen the ups and downs, right? Tour guides aren't robots.

You need to do more than the crowded 90 min tour. Remember it’s a public school and it doesn’t track internet because UVAdoesn’t have the resources to throw a lot at tracking interest or running tours. If you go, remember it’s a World UNESCO site and plan well out in advance what you want to tour:the Rotinda, Poe’s room, the lawn, the grad schools, if your child is interested, the museums. Go to the particular college your child is interested (we called ahead to head of department to set up a private interview and tour of the College); tour the career center; take the historical tours; go to the mall for dinner; go to the corner for lunch: ask students from your kids’ high school to take them out and show them the town or stay overnight in their room. Don’t just buzz in and expect to get everything from a 90 min tour. With public school you need to be more resourceful and not be sponges. They don’t need you. You need them

Oh lord, the UVA booster is in overdrive. We did most of the things you listed and came away underwhelmed too. It's definitely not for everyone.

William and Mary. Horribly dull, current students wouldn't look anyone in the eye, dreary feel all around.

agree with others on Duke - huge disappointment on so many levels. My DS and I looked at each other midway through the tour and both knew it was time to bolt. Really luved UNC and Northeastern

Tufts, Duke (but loved UNC-CH)

The best tour we had was at Indiana University. It was well organized, we got swag, we saw a video and then had a nice tour by an enthusiastic student who was thrilled to be there and very involved. The tulips were out, the grass was green. It was stunning.

Fordham. Got off the train, walked around the perimeter of campus, saw where a 2 million jewel robbery had taken place the week before and got back on the train to head back to the city. DD was like hell no!

The hype is only local. Outside of the DMV it is not as well regarded or known. It is a regional school in that regard.

I'm as irritated by the UVA boosters as much as the next guy, but UVA is quite selective for a state school (20% acceptance rate). More so than UMD or many others. So as state schools go... I think it deserves respect.

Oh, it’s you again.

Like visiting a class in session, talking with a faculty member or students in their intended major. Or anything out of the ordinary?

American did a very short AO talk but then had a panel of maybe 7 students in different majors/programs lead a panel discussion and then the students opened it up to a Q&A. It was a nice change and didn’t feel canned.

I’m surprised the “UVA is regional” poster is still around. Or it’s a kid from rival VT or UMD. UVA is the no 3 public in the US per USNWR. That’s hardly “regional” as UCLA, Berkeley snd Michigan are not regional.

Oh, it’s you - the one who accuses anyone who doesn’t like UVA of being from “rival VT or MD.” Just stop dragging other schools into your completely bizarre obsession with UVA. Some people like it, others don’t. Get over yourself.
