What is your inflation “red line” at grocery stores?

Anonymous
I usually shop at Aldi but occasionally stop at Giant because it is close to my house. Every single time, I am shocked at prices and come out with the bare minimum of items that I absolutely need that day and save the rest for when I go to Aldi.

Prices have gone up at Aldi too but not as outrageously as Giant, Safeway, HT.

I’m a single mom on strict budget, I don’t know if I have any “red line” items but we’ve changed our eating. Less meat, almost no restaurants. Like PPs, pivoting menu to what deals can be found at store.
That said, there are still a lot of cheap healthy foods out there.
I load up my cart with apples, carrots, peppers, cabbage, sweet potatoes, oats, beans, rice, mangoes, avocados, cilantro, tomatoes, limes, bananas, peanut butter. Add a little meat, eggs, and dairy and plenty of good meals can be had. I don’t bother with organic. Most likely staying away from sweetened drinks and processed meats will be enough to avoid many health problems.

If it lasts 6 months it’s not fresh. We don’t eat any canned goods. I occasionally use a can of tomato paste or beans in a recipe. So there’s no way for me to stock up anyway.

I don’t eat canned goods either? I stocked up on dried beans, rice, almond milk, chicken, salmon, and shelf stable food.

I also refuse to skimp on quality meat and eggs. One area I am skimping on is bottled water. Frankly shouldn't be buying it anyhow. But the water I buy used to be $3.99 per case of 24. it's now $8. and it's not fancy water! it's store brand! We have a filtered water function with our fridge, so I've been using a metal flask now instead of plastic water bottles.

Perimeter items have become expensive too!

I acknowledged that in my post. I said I was not going to skimp on those perimeter items just because they've gone up in price.

Anonymous wrote:This thread is bizarre in so many ways but... I really haven't seen this kind of significant price increase anywhere in the last month? I live inside the Beltway and have shopped Lidl, Giant and Whole Foods in that time. Oh, and the Amish market, but that probably doesn't count. What am I missing?

The price increases are hit and miss. I was just out tonight with this thread in mind and got my vegetables, salads, yogurt, and luncheon meat for basically the same prices they have been. But there are items that have really crept up, like soda and canned soup already mentioned here. Things that are never really off-season are more noticeable because they don’t vary in a normal time.

Plus cat food. The manager at PetSmart said it's because a shortage of aluminum not food. I stop buying soda, organic strawberry and imported cheese

UPDATE

Just found out Hunter Biden is in charge of the World Food Program so now we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing we will get all we need. But in the mean time please stock up if you can. Like all government projects it may have it's own supply issues. It took 3 days to apply for social security so yeah, rollout can be slow.

That can’t be real…

Two quarts of organic milk over $5. I buy nonorganic now.

I think the PP with the trucker BIL has been on too many Fox type sites. I am not buying the Armageddon is coming narrative. Food used to cost much more than it does now, as a proportion of one’s income. Maybe this is just a correction.

I get the feeling I'm being ripped off. I don't believe the farmer really suddenly needs to charge $8 for strawberries.

Um, I don't think this is true.

"Biden was on the board of directors of World Food Program USA, a 501(c)(3) charity based in Washington, D.C. that supports the work of the UN World Food Programme from 2011 to 2017; he served as board chairman from 2011 to 2015."

Being on a board, even being a chairman, of a 501c3 isn't even close to getting "us" food. And I'm not sure his role there is ongoing.

Still $10.50 at Costco for 3 half gallons. Or $5.99/gallon at my Food Lion.

I haven’t stopped buying anything but definitely notice the bread and eggs are more. Cereal has been nuts for a few years now.

Had anyone said cereal? I won’t pay 5.50 for a box of cereal. We are big cereal eaters but from now on I’m waiting for sales.

All these companies screaming inflation and yet they are making huge profits.
