| Our mail carrier gives each barking dog the finger as he goes by. Thinking they can pick up on his dislike. |
| My dog is a terrier and has taught our other dog to go bonkers. We’ve tried a trainer and treats (other dog got fat). We keep them in and walk them in quiet locations. Some terriers are just barkcrazy when they see other dogs. |
Not op. Noise canceling headphones are not safe. You can't hear anyone potentially attack you and you can't hear sirens. I hate it when I am walking my dog and a dog I don't see comes rushing up to bark aggressively at us. Like if they got out you would be torn apart. There are other dog barking which while not pleasant is not as scary. People leave their dogs in their yard too long. |
Exactly. The dog is our first line of security. She only scratches on the window when she realizes it's us or the dog walker coming up the walk. Otherwise, lots of growling and barking. I'd rather that than no idea there's someone casing my house. And if she barks at the neighbors, they'll get over it. If you are super reactive to a dog barking from INSIDE THEIR OWN HOME, they maybe you need help. |
DP. I agree with you on for most part I think there’s a big difference between a dog barking outside, either on a walk or in the yard (which can make someone concerned about whether the dog is truly being restrained) and a dog barking while in the confines of his own home. You don’t have the right to ask someone to silence the dog or keep him from the windows when he is in his own home. You aren’t entitled to a bark free walk. |
You're not entitled to anything. |

Dogs are allowed to bark inside their own homes. People are allowed choose barkers as pets. Other people are allowed to find barking annoying. People are allowed to state that they find barking annoying. Different people tolerate, appreciate and despise different things. We really don’t need to argue or name call over it.
OP, you got your answers. Some dog owners chose dogs that can’t help barking to alert their family or defend their home because it’s so instinctual it can’t be trained out of them, whether their owners approve of the barking or not. Some dog owners specifically want their dogs to deter people from approaching their home. |

I would rather bet barked at by a dog than verbally assaulted by the many creeps roaming around the streets.
Get over yourself OP. If you don’t want to beer a dog, move out to a farm. |
*hear a dog. Autocorrect. |
NP: mostly agree. My dog barks from inside when people approach our house, and then we shush her. But she will bark yes. That is what dogs do, and it is in our own home so not anyone’s business. She is not allowed in our front yard (at all, really) but is allowed in our backyard (fenced) off leash. She may bark at times if she hears other dogs barking or whatever, but we go out and shush her (and bring her indoors if she doesn’t stop quickly). She is not allowed outdoors when we are not home. She is absolutely not allowed to bark at other dogs or anything else while out on a walk. She is immediately & sternly told “no! Leave it, let’s go” (she is to ignore the distracting dog or item and hustle along with me, praised & rewarded with a treat when past the distraction). But barking at the window when people approach our house?! I don’t know any dog who doesn’t do that...no grounds to be annoyed about it IMHO. |
We’re pretty much the same, except our dogs also aren’t allowed to bark at windows/doors. It took awhile, but we now have one dog who is completely silent and never barks, and another who will let out the most blood-curdling, bone chilling bark when she truly is scared of something. |
Your experience is not everyone’s experience. My dog doesn’t bark at people who walk right up to our door, deliver a package or ring the doorbell. The sound of barking really bothers some people. Your one dog isn’t much of a problem, but when people who are sensitive to noise get barked at in 7 different locations during the same 30-40 minute walk, there’s a cumulative effect that leaves them sick of barking. Your dog isn’t doing anything wrong, but people who are annoyed by her barking aren’t wrong either. |

My dog is a 7 pound maltipoo. She's a barker.
She barks on two occasions. The first is when she hears our neighbors come and go. I guess that's her "protecting us from potential intruders" bark. I've apologized to the neighbors repeatedly but they've all said they don't mind. The second is when she sees another dog when we're outside, and that seems to be her "Hey! Hey! I'm also a dog! Let's be friends!" bark. I've consulted with trainers and they've all told me that her barking is happy enthusiasm, and not aggression. It seems to annoy me more than it annoys anyone else. She usually stops after she gives the other dog a sniff or if I pull her away. I always try to get her to stop but sometimes it takes a minute. She also barks her head off at the off-leash park because it's full of dogs she wants to play with, but I think that's fair game. I've never been out with her before 9 AM or after dark. That's the best I can do. |
