Just take a look at the diversity in the student population at these schools. This goes a long way in explaining why for the first time a public university is #1.

So if a school has large numbers of students who go on to work in education, social work, publishing/journalism, or the arts, their ranking will suffer because of the importance of salary.

If you graduate a lot of ibankers, engineers, and tech bros, you do better.

Well, not quite, because number 10-ranked Northwestern has a relatively huge proportion of grads who go into journalism, the arts, and music, but is still highly ranked. I can't tell you why that is, however.

Schools near big cities will have higher earning alumni.

Hopkins, cmu and caltech would be poor fits for some students. Stop getting hung up on the exact placement in the list and look at it as a group of good option with enough variety to find something for many different types of students.

Esp since as an expensive private it's going to have the odds working against it. That's actually way higher than I thought it would be--it's essentially saying that on average going to NYU is going to have a higher return on investment than the vast majority of in-state publics!

And in this list, there's little difference in outcomes (salary) if you go to 100 so you don't have to find a match in the top 50.
