If I had unlimited funds I would have paid a tutor everyday but I don’t. OG tutors want $80-100 an hour and only working for 30 minutes at one house isn’t worth it for most. My son could only work for 30 minutes at a time. Of course I wasn’t as good as a certified tutor but it is scripted program. I studied the teachers guide and watched YouTube videos. Here is a sample: https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/WRS_Materials_Information_Booklet.pdf I didn’t think it was that hard and my son improved so much. |

Steps 1-6 of Wilson is $299. Totally worth it!!!!

| I agree with the idea of doing it yourself if you child is receptive. You can get trained in the Asdec level I program. It’s very scripted/ procedural and you will save a ton of money. It’s really hard to spend $80-$100 an hr for a lesson in the letter m, and that what you will be doing. The entire first level mainly covers individual letter sounds. |
| I bought the Wilson materials and tried to DIY, but found it hard to figure out all the different parts--just too many different activities that weren't explained very well or needed flipping back and forth between different books. I've heard Barton is better for parents in terms of ease of use. |
Nah, this is often mentioned at IEP meetings but MCPS despises ASDEC. If you want ASDEC training you have to go to Frederick County. MCPS only pays for ‘internal’ training at their own ‘university.’ Not editorializing - you can make your own judgments about the place. |
| Ie MCPS. ASDEC is a gem. |
Ah sorry I am the PP above. Didn’t catch this post. Yep MCPS is the devil incarnate to dyslexics. |
I’m OP. Since we’re in MCPS, that’s very disheartening to hear. |
| I suggest considering OG via zoom. It works very well for us (especially because we use a Surface device that allows our child to hand write using Penbook). Our tutor says she needs to see our child’s mouth for some of the exercises which means virtual is preferable than in person without a mask since our child is under 12. The tutor does come in person for read aloud once a week. |

We LOVED our tutor Danielle, who has years of experience at the lab school and out children made so many gains.

I am in FFX so the tutor we used is probably not helpful but we did go twice a week before school because DD was better in the morning for the intense work. She was about 20 minutes late to school on those two days but she wasn't missing anything of value and she thought this was cool/rewarding so it kept her motivated to continue with OG.
I think after school would have been a miserable experience. |
My kid completed Wilson levels 1 & 2 and was halfway through 3 with a tutor but then we had to stop for various reasons. We are trying to get started with OG again and looking at options. Could ASDEC skip the beginning level if it’s really just letter sounds? |
