Are tattoos trashy? Yay or Nay and why?

Anonymous
I think on young people who have a boho look well designed and executed black tattoos can look good and fit their aesthetic. The hipster look with tons of tattoos, thick rimmed glasses etc comes off as dated. Young male professional athletes with tattoos are hot (to me).

I think as people age it gets harder to pull off tattoos and they very, very rarely add positively towards anyone’s appearance.

I definitely don’t see them as a class indicator but I do see them as indicative of a person’s taste.

Yes. Tattoos are trashy. Always.

I hate the word trashy, but, they really are.

Um, what?! You just did.

I don’t like most tattoos, but I don’t think they’re trashy. People who use the word trashy, though…

It depends.

I don't think they are trashy at all. Not all are my style, but they are someone's self-expression and no judgment here.

Yes, most of the time.

You can find something trashy but not judge the person. The two are mutually exclusive.

I wouldn’t use the word trashy but I don’t find them aesthetically pleasing with very few exceptions.

Uh, no, you can't. "Trashy" is an inherently judgmental word. It's like calling something "stupid" or "offensive" and then saying "but I don't judge."

If you aren't judging, you'd pick a different word.

33F, no tattoos myself, it depends.

A colleague of mine has sleeves that are really well done. My FIL has his brother's dog tags tattooed on his arm from when they both served and his brother died in Vietnam. I don't think they're trashy at all. But head/neck/hand tattoos (especially hands as they fade badly), badly done ones, or bad subject matter, yeah, that doesn't look so great.

If you want a tattoo, don't cheap out, shop around and pick your artist carefully, and really take time to consider the design and how it might fade or stretch over time.

I think they are fine as long as they are in a place where you can hide them when needed. A small tattoo on the small of your back that shows when you are in a bikini--whatever. A big tattoo on the shoulder that shows when you wear a sleeveless dress in a wedding--trashy.

I feel like tattoos used to be the indicator that you are cooler than the rest. Now I just think they are basic.

Using “trashy” to describe tattoos is the exception to this rule.

2 me they are. All of them.

Yep. Don’t do it. It’s a fad that, when it’s over, will be a marker of a certain age.
