Don’t worry about the letter. Dcps has been sending these out for years. Even pre-pandemic I had to roll my eyes. “Your child was out sick 5 days this year! Attendance is crucial!” Um, I kept them home from school because they had fevers, presumably from some virus they caught at school, per dcps policy.
The fact that they are continuing to send these letters reflects a particular lack of situational awareness. But welcome to Dcps. get used to it. |

OP, keeping your kid enrolled when she was not attending was mildly unethical and you know it. That's why you are so defensive. It's not a huge deal, other people also did it, but it wasn't 100 percent an honorable thing to do. That's why you are here looking for support -- to make yourself feel better about an iffy decision.
Fwiw, I have a son who did prek 3 at a DCPS last year. The virtual classes were somewhat painful but we did them every day, he grew connected to his teacher, he did some projects he is really proud of, and i was extremely impressed with the patience and creativity of the teachers. Then he did get an in-person spot and it was 100 times better, or course. |
OP here. I forgot before I posted what DCUM is like. We were at a Title I EOTR school with no waitlist last year. People on here think what I did was “unethical” because they are imagining that a took a spot from another child at the kind of school you all would like to send your kids to. In reality, I took nothing from anyone, but my child was deprived of a year of PK and our family of a year of childcare. And we’re far from alone. But you are all to myopic to imagine such a thing— you assume I robbed some poor while child of a bilingual Montessori spot at one of your coveted schools. But y’all keep on being you. |
| Our number of absences was 42! So you beat us, haha. Barely did virtual, but child attended in-person half days in the latter part of the year. |
Also, I was somewhat alarmed by the letter at first but quickly realized it didn't matter. His teachers had told me it would not matter. |

| We got a letter about our K kid saying he had two absences. I threw it out. Not sure I remember him having any absences, but I certainly didn't care about bothering to make sure their records from last year were accurate. |
| What foolishness to send a note like this when we want parents to err on the side of caution with symptomatic kids. DCPS at its finest. |
Seriously what a waste of time for what? To get a form letter saying you had zero absences? You going to be one of those parents trying to get your suck up kid the perfect attendance award too? |
+1 OP was not being unethical at all. DCPS didn’t give two craps about student learning last year, especially the PK kids. That letter, while meaningless, really lacks self awareness on DCPS’ part. |
Hi! So you do know that pre-K wasn’t supposed to have a virtual option- because it’s stupid. But y’all pouted and ta-da, you got your virtual pre-K. I think the parents who constantly protest that DCPS doesn’t listen forget just how often and easily they changed their minds. |
Uh, lots of us didn’t want it. I only did virtual PK because I was told repeatedly that we would be in person eventually. We weren’t. Yes, it was whiny parents who got the virtual PK program. That doesn’t mean the rest of us agreed. It just didn’t occur to me to argue against it because it never occurred to me that anyone would demand it. Stop assuming all parents are the same. |
