LL Bean, Old Navy etc

Anonymous
Also a newly realized middle aged mom here who recently realized lands end and ll bean are awesome lol

I am getting a chambray shirt, a “shacket” and black and gray turtlenecks from LL bean for the fall.

They’re not doudy when you take it and pair it stuff that’s more on trend. And they feel great.

Like, a couple times per week. Finally this year, there has been some slight lightening and discoloration along the waist band on one of them. But I have gotten 15 years of frequent use out of them. I can point to several items like this. Their athletic tops only last about 2 years of frequent exposure to lots of sweat (I wear them for running and peloton and sweat like a drug runner at customs). They pill and eventually retain smells.

Their casual t-shirts are hit or miss in terms of quality. I recently threw out one t-shirt from 2011 that I frequently wore, due to discoloration in the arm pits.

+1 for ON athletic wear, leggings and shorts at least. Quality is as good as stuff I paid 3x as much for from Athleta.

I do find it odd how much better quality it is than most other stuff from Old Navy, much of which is awful.

LL Bean and Lands End have dropped drastically in quality since I started buying from them about 25 years ago. They’re just like any other cheap brand now. At least Lands End has big sales all the time. I am reluctant to pay LL Bean prices these days.

It’s hard to find cotton tees in good colors that fit well for some reason. The Universal Standard line at Target is great for this. Tanks, in particular, are a favorite there— I like the ribbed tanks, which are soft and stay that way.

This. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with the quality and prices at Target, this line in particular.

I like Old Navy fine for some kids' clothes. One of my kids is a beanpole and their skinny fit jeans work well for him, and he's going to outgrow them after a season anyway. I don't shop there for myself. The issue with LL Bean (which I love for other things like parkas and boots) is that it's boring.

Oooh, can you link to the "shacket"?

I've always worn stuff from LL Bean - mostly their plain colored tshirts and their sweaters. And fleeces/coats. Recently, I discovered these pants and have been living in them:

Obviously I'm not a monster, so I don't tuck my shirts into them, but they are super cute and comfortable and the zip pockets are great.

OP if you want high quality stuff for cheap try the thrift stores. You have to go a few times to get good deals but they’re out there. I just bought my kid a bunch of Under Armour stuff from the women’s section at Unique. Winter Coats aren’t out yet but will be soon. You can get North Face, Columbia etc…….

Love LL Bean for winter gear, jackets, outerwear, sweaters, casual dresses, and hiking clothes. Kids snow pants & winter coats have lasted years (2 years for first kid, handed down to 2nd kid, another 2 years of use, still decent enough to offer to a neighbor).

ON is cheap, trendy, and flimsy. Some cute stuff, but it only lasts a season. Great for kids clothes, they'll outgrow it by next season anyway.

Totally different stores.

LL Bean: forgot to include SLIPPERS!!! The best. All their shoes and boots are good, but the slippers are seriously the best.

I think Uniqlo has pretty nice inexpensive basics. Everlane too, but not at Old Navy prices.

I second Uniqlo. There stuff is more "basic" than Old Navy, which tends to carry more trendy items. But that's sort of the whole problem with Old Navy -- they will rip off trendy patterns, colors, styles and produce them quick and cheap, and then it will fall apart and look dated in a very short amount of time.

If you do buy from Old Navy (or anywhere) pay attention to fabric content. Look for natural fibers or natural fiber blends. Anything that's 100% poly is probably not worth it, and will be hard to clean and keep looking nice. I have found cute sweaters and jeans at Uniqlo, and a few pairs of slim stretch pants (not leggings, but like heavier weight "pixie" pants meant to fit close to the body but with a bit of structure) at Old Navy. I have also found sports bras at ON that worked out pretty well.

Both stores are great for kids clothes, especially if you shop during sales.
