Favorite location for traveling within 3 hours of DC?

The Hyatt Cambridge has outdoor and indoor pools and small beach area.

Cambridge is a good suggestion--not sure how booked they are for August if you are talking about this year. I would also consider stopping in Cambridge on the way to Ocean City and staying there. Still may be hard to find a place but sometimes they have good deals at the end of August since it's back to school time.

How about Richmond?

Natural Bridge/Frontier Culture Museum

I was also going to suggest the frontier culture museum. It is sort of like an outdoor historical playground, much less commercial than Williamsburg, and your kids are at a great age to enjoy it. Natural bridge is also amazing. Lots of kitschy stuff around it, but the actual experience of being under the bridge is otherworldly.

We are an International family. Our favorite destinations within three hours of DC are Dulles Airport and BWI.

Both have flights that can take us outside of this country to explore other cultures and enjoy diversity.

Sure, those are my favorite too, but there's a reason why OP asked for driving destinations. These are not exactly safe times to be flying internationally with unvaccinated children.

Way to make it all about your family, not the OP. Do you routinely fly out the entire family just for the weekend to "explore" and get your diversity fix? Must be nice.

I second Lewes/Bethany Beach area. Take the ferry over to Cape May. Nice ride and you will see dolphins and many birds.

I wasn't actually sure there was a wrong answer to this question, but here it is!

LOL! For real though.

Does the PP even live in the DMV? Because if the PP lives in the DMV, but has to leave the country to 'explore other cultures', then she must be living in some kind of bubble. I guess we're lucky because my kid experiences 'other cultures and diversity' at school, in our neighborhood, at his friends' homes, at soccer, and really, even when we go to Safeway.
