Is there psychology behind this?

He wants to interact but doesn't have the skills, so he reverts to school yard tactics.

Be kind, ask him how his weekend went.

I agree, he doesn't know what else to say. Be friendly.

+ 2. I also initially thought he has a crush, but then saw he does it to others, so I think he's just trying to be the cool funny guy and make friends.

I do this. I’m just trying to find a way to be friendly and start a conversation. This guy at work always eats his cereal in a giant mixing bowl. I am amused by it, though I have only tased him once about it.

Agree. I was once on the phone at the gym, talking into my earbuds, in the outdoor area away from everyone else. I was talking to my mom who was super upset about something and I said something like "Mom, I'll take care of it" or whatever, right as a trainer walked by. After I finished he came over and asked if I was on the phone. I said yes, talking to my mom. Then I went to workout. For the next TWO YEARS, I went to the gym 4 days a week, always wearing earbuds to listen to podcasts. And literally every single time I saw him he'd give me a wink and say "Always on your phone!!" Even shouting it across the gym if I was far from him.

It was so annoying but I think he thought we had some sort of inside joke or something. Just social awkwardness.

"You tell me that every time you see me, Larlo" Period. Total silence.

It’s really weird that some of you want “revenge” for bad jokes about straws.

He's just making small talk with you.

He sounds insecure, and is trying to put attention on you so that no one else notices how insecure or awkward he is.

I was friends for years with a person who constantly made fun of me, so I hear you. She was a truly mean, insecure control freak. And my brain isn't wired to put people down "as a joke." I hate that kind of humor, it's lazy and stupid.

This. I’m a female in a technical field for over 20+ years that is primary males. I have always found that the males that picked on me most were the ones who later confused crushes on me.

Correction: “Confessed” not “confused”
