How rich do you have to be to live in McLean, Great Falls or Vienna?

That’s probably because of all of the old people who live in McLean and aren’t working any more.

No, it has more to do with 1/2 of Tysons being in McLean (other 1/2 is Vienna), so the median incomes reflect those living in Tysons condos/apartments.

Otherwise, the residential areas in Great Falls trend older than those in McLean now, which is why the enrollment at Langley HS, which Great Falls kids attend, was declining over the last decade while the enrollment at McLean HS and the two main Vienna high schools (Madison and Marshall) was increasing.

I feel like Vienna is a bit more laid back but still has great schools. Don’t get me wrong; people are still mostly UMC but not as much as McLean. It’s also very neighborhood dependent. With your income, you would probably be fine in any of those places.

Lots of people rent in mclean just for the schools. They can't afford to buy but they blend in with the landed gentry.

250-400k? Do kids at Langley or McLean really think that’s poor? OP in this area, there will always be people are more well off but geez

Be well off in Vienna. Be less well off in McLean. Choose one. Either is a great place to live.

Who knows how much you make? Just buy a house and enjoy the living.

OP, please buy our house! We'll be listing right after Labor Day in a great neighborhood in Vienna. Probably in the 950,000 - 975,000 range. We're moving to be closer to family and a new job, but the house and neighborhood have been great to us!

OP stop worrying about what others think.

You do you and you will meet your people. Ignore the snobs.

There are snobs in every neighborhood. My first house cost $75,000 worst neighbors ever.

Our hhi is 375. Live in mclean. We are probably the poorest people in our neighborhood. But I don't think anyone cares. And we don't walk around with our tax returns in our back pocket.

Our HHI is around $350 and we live in a Vienna rambler. No one cares.

There are also a lot of people who work for the WB or IMF and whose salary isn’t reportable to the IRS. I’ve always wondered if their income is assumed to be zero and only their spouses’ income is included in the statistics.

If they are US citizens or have a green card, they pay US taxes. They have to file it themselves.

We are both well educated at good schools and have lived abroad. We aren’t too showy and do not come from wealthy families. We are looking for a nice single family home in a nice neighborhood with good schools. McLean has the best schools but I’m worried about being the “poor” family in an otherwise very rich area. What about Vienna?

Which would be a good fit for us?

Vienna sounds like the best fit for you. I’m sorry to tell you that elementary schools in McLean are not the best at all.

Vienna, esp town of Vienna is amazing. The neighborhood feel of it is amazing plus its so close to everything you need. I have family in Mclean and while the schools are better and the houses are bigger, it feels meh. I think some of the new money that moves into Mclean is for the prestige.
