I was diagnosed with prediabetes at age 30 and had gestational diabetes twice. My A1c and fasting glucose stayed stable with diet and exercise until last year when I turned 45, when my fasting sugar crept up a bit and I developed fatty liver. I started metformin 500 mg daily, and I'm amazed at how it has helped me lose weight. There was a noticeable decrease in my appetite. Along with upping my exercise intensity and tracking calories, I lost 10 lb with minimal hunger, and much less of the exhaustion that I had felt while dieting pre-metformin. My BMI went from 24 to 22.
My advice is to consider metformin if you are in a group for whom the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends it. https://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/42/Supplement_1/S29 ADA Recommendations 3.5 Metformin therapy for prevention of type 2 diabetes should be considered in those with prediabetes, especially for those with BMI ≥35 kg/m2, those aged <60 years, and women with prior gestational diabetes mellitus. | Doesn't answer your question, but I was also diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Switched to whole grain rice, pasta, breads etc and 1 year later my A1c is much better! |
| Just an anecdote but my mom was on metformin for years and later suddenly developed kidney failure. Her doctor said prolonged metformin could do that. |

You should be on very low carb diet.
Breakfast- Eggs Lunch/Dinner is protein and vegetable. |

You are going to have to reduce your carbs and increase your exercise.
Sub roast vegetables for bread and potatoes, at first not worrying about the carb count in the vegetables (because they will be lower than that of potatoes and bread). Also add some crudités to your day (with nice, fatty dip! It makes them taste so much better, makes so many of the vitamins so much more available to your body and helps keep you fat) and add a salad to one or all of your meals. Stuff yourself with vegetables. You like sugar? Me too. But where you would have had a bowl of ice cream, can you just make it a bite of ice cream most days? Have a bowl maybe once a week and then try to reduce that frequency later. And if your job allows it, every time you eat, exercise. Have breakfast, ten minute walk. Have lunch, fifteen minute walk. After supper, take the family on a stroll for half an hour. Walking helps with blood sugar so much. |
