Kid 1 - 4th grade for round 1 and wore them for a year. Got them again in 8th grade - will wear them about 2y
Kids 2 - got them in 9th grade - will wear them for about 2y |
| Got them in March 2019 at 12 years old. Just had them removed in May at 14 years old. So a total of 2 years 2 months. |

DD is 11 1/2 and she just got her braces 1 week ago. Got a palate expander in May 2021. Currently wearing both expander and braces. Not sure how long this journey will go, but man! there's a lot of metal in my kids mouth.
Finally this will get our dentist off our backs for getting braces for DD. |

Roughly, early middle school.
Palate expander, braces, and nighttime headgear (reverse pull, for what is retrospect was probably a pretty minor underbite) in 6th, braces only through all of 7th, braces off in early 8th, retainers for the rest of her natural life, it seems like. Our dentist was a big proponent of waiting until all the permanent teeth were in to start orthodontic treatment, unless there was a major problem brewing. DD had no serious cosmetic or bite issues, so she didn’t start treatment until just after puberty. Seems to have worked fine, though. Her teeth and jaw moved pretty quickly, and she was able to ditch the headgear after about 6 months. I think it helped was that she was old enough to understand that really good compliance meant a shorter overall treatment plan! She’s still great about her retainers, because she doesn’t want to go through all that mess again, ever. |
| 11 after a year of headgear treatment for an underbite |
This is the expected path for my 9yo as well. Younger sibling will likely only need one round/phase in the 12-14yo timeframe. |

My son was 10 when we started Phase I with an expander. Open bite and crowding from sucking his thumb when he was little.
He got braces at 12. Phase II. Will wear them for 2 years. |
| Did round 1 in third and fourth grade. Got them off a few months ago. The plan is for more teeth to come in and then do round 2 in middle school. I think it all depends on the specific issues involved and type of treatment needed. |
