actually I think it is the ex-Catholics that are the most anti-Catholic. And often for understandable reasons (e.g. this guy).

You must travel in very restricted circles (or somehow believe that DCUM is representative of DC).

NP here. If you have lived in other educated areas of the u.s., you would n of find the hateful, anti-Catbhlic sentiment one does here. How ignorant. One of many reasons this area does not impress as the locals think.

OP here. Just hang on a minute, everyone! I simply asked about the guy who protests about the cover up of abuse within the Catholic church. I have no idea where these sweeping accusations of DC (and DCUM?) being anti-Catholic have come from. There are clearly issues that are coming to the forefront and it will be interesting to see what becomes of them. But I did NOT start an anti-Catholic post. My mom is one!! And I haven't seen any of the PPs do that either. So try and reign in that paranoia!

i kind of have to agree here, but i grew up in a predominantly italian/catholic area. obviously, i've met other catholics. I've attended church so i know they exist, but the ratio is definitely less here.

Frankly, I wouldn't say I agree with any post that referred to people as Jewy.

but someone said waspy and its ok? people can be jewy. doesn't mean that being jewy is a bad thing.

PP here. Didn't mean jewy in a derogatory way. Just meant that in the District there doesn't seem to be a lot of people that are pro-Catholic. I stand by that assumption. Ive been in numerous situations where someone will make a stab at Catholics because of the abortion issue, or because they think Catholic schools are sub-par etc. This thread coupled with what's on the news just got made my antennas go up.

Wait a minute. I'm Catholic and I think this attitude -- that if you criticize the Church you are anti-Catholic -- totally and completely stinks. This is exactly like telling someone that if they are against the war then they are against America.

You should be able to criticize sex abuse in the Church without being labeled a bigot.

I believe that we, as Catholics, have been taught that questioning the Church is not allowed, that the Church is not a democracy, that you can't be a Cafeteria Catholic. But it is wrong to expect that the Church should not be held accountable for its shortcomings. It's just wrong and if you throw around "anti-Catholic" at anyone who has a problem with a single Church policy, you are doing your own faith a grave disservice.

(a) Not being "pro Catholic" doean't mean anti-catholic, you know.

(b) Criticizing the church becaue of its stand on abortion, response to the abuse issue, or (perceived) inferiority of Catholic schools doesn't make someone anti-catholic.

(c) "waspy (protestant)" cracked me up. As opposed to all those waspy non-protestants? Do you even know what WASP stands for?
