Also, this is the new capital modernist's website. It moved:

Well, it depends how it's done up. I grew up in LA's Eichler heaven in the '80s, but all of my friends' homes had been redecorated with "country kitchens" and other crappy anachronisms that would have suited traditional homes much better. Design mags will testify that now many of these modern classics are being beautifully restored to their mid-C roots. Personally, I like the contrast between the period details in older housing stock and mid-C furniture. And of course, mid-C SFHs usually reflect a very suburban style and are found in car-centric neighborhoods. My own inner modernista would be happier in one of the (actual old warehouse or school, not all new construction) loft conversions in town. Check out the interior photos posted here, for example: http://www.yalelofts.com/floorplans.html . |
| Ooooh- click where it says "Historic Yale" because I definitely wasn't recommending the new part! |
| There are many in Somerset, Chevy Chase. Agree that Modern Capital is a great resource. The architecture is def not for everyone. |

Carderock Springs, a neighborhood in close in Bethesda with great schools, is all in the style you are looking for. You don't give your price range but here are a couple examples under a million:

| There are a bunch in the neighborhoods off Persimmon Tree (below the beltway and above MacArthur) go farther north on Persimmon Tree and its a mix of arts and crafts and McMansions. |
Ha ha, I thought the same thing about that teal carpeting! Yikes! That said, the interior has some very nice features, if you overlook the purple suede sofa and such.

| Tanterra in Brookeville, MD (20833). Very family-friendly neighborhood with tons of kids and very active PTA at the local elementary school (Greenwood). Fun swim club. Very affordable compared to what's been listed thus far --- you could easily renovate and customize it to meet your needs. |
I actually like that home, (structurally) but would argue that the styl is not mid-century, but rather, contemporary. Though OP asked for both. |
| OP here: I'm just checking this post and am amazed at all the responses! Thanks to everyone - does this mean there are people out there who love these styles??? Anyway, love both the houses on the long and foster sites, but they are both just a little too far out. Our price range is up to $1.6, but at that price, we could not do any renovations. I'll check out modern capitol. Keep the suggestions coming! And thanks again. |
| New Mark Commons in Rockville has a lot of contemporary homes. Same developer as Carderock Springs, I believe. |
| Actually the Dahlonega home (1st long and foster) is very close-in. Glen Echo heights is about 1-2 miles past the city line. |
