I agree.

Pisses me off that pot is in the list of what they test for. Also stupid if her to take that risk.

I was an Olympic hopeful in 2008 and 2012 and even back then there was an app for USADA and WADA (plus the website) and there was no question about what you can and cannot have in your system when in and out of competition. I had to reference it every single time I went to the doctor.

So, I don’t feel bad for her. She knew. She did it anyway.

What sport - just curious

Extreme curling.

I’m sad she made a mistake that will cost her the Olympics.

I think this experience will make her grow as a person.

A reporter notified her that her mom was dead the day she smoked pot. She used an unhealthy coping mechanism to deal with that.

She’s human. I almost love her more now.

I hope she gets the counseling she needs and thrives.

I actually think she will be a better role model with this misstep.

Michael Phelps also got caught smoking pot. Didn’t stop him.

I love her!!

Phelps was in 'retirement' when he was caught smoking pot. This woman's a member of the Olympic team that's scheduled to compete in 3 weeks. And there's no way she didn't know pot is a prohibited substance, no way.
Too bad as she had a real chance to win..

He wasn't in retirement, but it was between Olympics which reduced the impact. I read he was banned from competing for three months. It was a big deal for him mental health wise, but the timing not as problematic as for Ms Richardson.

We don’t want to send our best to the Olympics more than we wa t to punish these talented young woman.

Not saying the rule is a good one, but this isn’t “punishing these talented young woman”, it’s a rule all olympians must follow. I am heartbroken for her and I hope she gets the support she needs to stay at the top of her game.

This is dumb and not fair. They should let her race wtf.

I have to say I just don't get this. It's a world-wide rule. Going to the Olympics isn't a right. It's absolutely awful what happened to her mom, I do think it's a bit crazy that that's the rule, I think she's an absolutely amazing athlete, I feel so terrible for her, but she broke a rule. Maybe it's a stupid rule. Maybe they should update the rule book. But it's a rule. It was a stupid rule that ladies in ice dance weren't allowed to wear trousers up until last season but if a woman performed wearing trousers, I'd understand why she got a deduction.

This woman is barely an adult and experienced something f massively traumatic. She made a minor mistake and is being punished pretty harshly for it.

Fine, she broke a rule and has to suffer the consequences, but how could somebody not feel bad for her? Some of you are seriously lacking in empathy.

It’s timing she can run in the relay but not the 100. She will not miss the olympics but she will miss her opportunity to compete in the individual events. The ruling is fair but the rule is archaic.

Its not that I don't feel bad for her, but rules are what they are. Everyone going to the Olympics knows what the rules are. Everyone knows they are taken seriously. Now, I don't think this should even be a rule. But it is. And if you start making exemptions for one person, it becomes a slippery slope. I feel bad for her, she's young and made a mistake. But I'm also annoyed that she didn't think this through and now she has to suffer the consequences. Even more annoyed with the people saying she should be exempt from the rule.

It is a matter of who is affected. Russia is banned from this Olympics yet 23 Russians will compete as independents. Why? It's a matter of who is affected. She likely will be the catalyst for removal of marijuana as a banned substance. And, once it is removed, the question becomes -- why did we ban people for marijuana usage, but not say for alchohol usage?

There was a rule. She broke it. She knew she broke it and she’s taken responsibility. Case closed.

What one thinks of the rule itself is irrelevant.

+1

She needs a really strong mental, with a firm moral compass. She has lived a hard life, and I really hope this doesn’t derail her.

They need to stop wasting time and money on drug testing. Let them do whatever drugs they want and let the best druggie win.

We really need to get rid of bad rules. It makes no sense to continue to victimize people for breaking stupid rules in the grounds that they knew what the rule was.

Marijuana is a masking agent that’s why it is banned.
Her time progression is suspect.
The timing of her positive test is also suspect.
Sad for her but she did it.
