NP. I think the private-school poster is talking about small parochial schools. |
OP. We are not talking about the small parochial schools, rather the larger $30K per year ones, but not the level of Sidwell and the like. |
Our experience at Campbell was that they had very low academic standards and a principal who could barely tolerate parents and lets parents know that she'd rather not interact with them. Also, little to no communication between school and parents. But the main thing was that the academic standards were about just getting by, not excelling. |
Still don’t know of any private schools that have licensed teachers on staff. These things matter, y’all… |
I don’t think that’s true, but anyway, teacher licensure has no bearing on how well somebody actually teaches. Or at least on measurable student outcomes. (I am still a supporter of public schools though, for us private just isn’t worth the money) |
You are right. A license does not make a good teacher, but does ensure a certain amount of training and preparation. In my humble opinion, the individual teacher is the single most important factor in all of this. You can have tons of resources, technology, whatever- but the teacher correctly and effectively using that stuff makes the most impact. Class size is pretty damn important, too. I will say private has it there. |
$30K?! Holy Mackerel. Definitely out of my price range, but hey if you’ve got it… I’m not sure what a $30K a year school does. I imagine you get a LOT of sunshine up your 👗 for that. |
You realize that different families have different income levels and that different families make different choices right? |
Do they? I'm a public school parent, and we have had some shockingly bad teachers (and even worse administrators) in APS. |
Overall, I’ve had really good experiences with APS staff. |
What a dumb comment. This whole thread is about someone making choices. |
I’m staying out of this. There are some really bitter know-it-alls on here, that’s for sure. They went go school, so they know everything about it. I’m an APS educator, and have been in education for over 15 years. If you have $30K to throw around for private, do it, if you want the smaller classes and if you’re okay with the homogeneity (some actually want that, I think), but it’s my opinion that the schools in Arlington are very, very good. |
I’ve known many licensed teachers who have left public for private. |
If they got a break on their children’s tuition, I could see it. Otherwise, I cannot imagine why anyone would. Public school teachers are paid fairly, at best. Private school teachers are very poorly compensated. |
I’m sure. Everyone is falling all over themselves to blow sunshine up your dress for less money. |
