The top film programs are Tisch at NYU and USC, although the Newhouse facilities are impressive. There are many other good programs, but you need to decide if you want a film program that is at an general university like USC, NYU, BU, UT, Univ of Miami, Chapman, Loyola, UCLA etc, where you have access to a broad range of academic subjects, or a film program at an arts school, like Emerson or NC School of the Arts, where an extensive liberal arts education is not offered. I would avoid Wesleyan- while they may have some opportunities, unless things have changed, they are very proud of teaching students on their 1950s equipment. A student is not admited to the film school directly, but you have to apply after your freshman year. There are limited opportunities for film students to make movies in the film program, and they encourage film students to complete their capstone project in a subject other than film, instead of making a movie. To remedy the lack of opportunities, the student club association financially sponsors students to make films outside the auspices of the film school, and there is tension between the film club and the school. |
I was there then also. SU had two film programs, one Newhouse and one VPA. They were very different. |
| Thoughts on Mizzou for journalism? |
|
I know DCUM would frown but having spent 20 years in television production one of the strongest alumni networks was Temple University’s RTF school. Now not sure (knowing what I know now) I would NOT recommend anyone to enter that biz - but probably pretty similar feeling for a lot of professions.

| Sorry posting while sleepy. Bottom line; don’t go into television but maybe everyone says that about their work |
Someone will have those jobs inter future tho — or do you mean aí and holograms will fully take over? |
| Mizzou is great. Just as good as Newhouse, and a great deal for in-staters. |
Agreed, Temple is great -- lots of Temple grads working in East Coast media. |
20 years ago, I would have said it is right there with the best programs in the country, but being in Missouri, the state GOP has gutted the university and it isn't nearly what it was. I would look to other schools first. |
I'd agree with this. Medill is top dog, but I'd say Newhouse is a close second. USC is also solid, as are Temple, Ithaca, and Emerson. |
I would think twice about Ithaca https://www.ithacajournal.com/story/news/local/2021/02/25/ithaca-college-faculty-eliminations-art-music/6814594002/ |
Wow! Thanks for that notice. That does not bode well for Ithaca... its main selling point has always been its media/comms/arts focus. |
| From what I have heard, Ithaca puts most of its focus and resources into the Park School of Communication, which is very highly regarded. Maybe they are just trying to eliminate some smaller programs to focus on what they do best? Just hypothesizing here. |
These look like much larger structural, probably financial, problems. If you read the article, they're also eliminating majors in communication studies, which is huge. In fact, several of the programs they're gutting are within the Park School of Communication. Their endowment is only about $330 million, which is tiny for that size. They probably rely a bunch on student tuition for their budget. Doesn't look good all around. |
This is somewhat old but do you have any recommendations for something similar to Newhouse for me? I am very interested in Newhouse because they have a great visual communications program. I am a photographer (mainly sports) and I want to expand my knowledge to video, design, media, and journalism. I am looking for other schools like Newhouse that offer opportunities to do dip into all of those while also expanding my abilities in photography both at the sports and outside worlds. Currently my plan is to apply to Newhouse early decision but I also would like to find other schools for fallback just incase I don't get into Newhouse. I am located in New York but I'm willing to go to anywhere to get a good education. Thanks! |
