OP here - thank you all so much for the responses. I think he is most interested in the television, radio and film department at Newhouse but that could change.
The top film programs are Tisch at NYU and USC, although the Newhouse facilities are impressive. There are many other good programs, but you need to decide if you want a film program that is at an general university like USC, NYU, BU, UT, Univ of Miami, Chapman, Loyola, UCLA etc, where you have access to a broad range of academic subjects, or a film program at an arts school, like Emerson or NC School of the Arts, where an extensive liberal arts education is not offered. I would avoid Wesleyan- while they may have some opportunities, unless things have changed, they are very proud of teaching students on their 1950s equipment. A student is not admited to the film school directly, but you have to apply after your freshman year. There are limited opportunities for film students to make movies in the film program, and they encourage film students to complete their capstone project in a subject other than film, instead of making a movie. To remedy the lack of opportunities, the student club association financially sponsors students to make films outside the auspices of the film school, and there is tension between the film club and the school.
