OP here. Thanks for the tips! There are some really good ideas here. I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous about hosting these family friends - they're 10 years older than my parents. Needless to say, I want to be sure we take them to all the appropriate DC sights and show them a really good time without breaking the bank. Ugh, the pressure. They're from Europe and literally travel 80% of the year for fun (they're retired). |
Ii think Oyamel is fun, although maybe a little young for this purpose. For fancy there is the Willard - which is a DC institution. There is a good lunch place/bistro in there if you just want the experience without the fancy meal. Clyde's is classic american. What about Hook in Georgetown, or the casual one next store to it. |

I'd forgotten about Clyde's and Hook, thanks! |
A Pho house somewhere in NoVa as many from Europe haven't tried Vietnamese. Market Lunch in Eastern Market for crabcakes. |
Pho Viet on Rt. 1 in Alexandria is excellent. The best Pho in the area though is Pho Vn One in Beltsville, MD. Also on Rt.1. Also make sure you say it correclty. http://www.lovingpho.com/pho-opinion-editorial/how-to-pronounce-pho/ |
