How often does your 10/11 year old boy cry?

All the time!

Maybe two or three times a year for my 12 year old - but he is a very internal kid and when he finally cries, he really lets it all out. I would almost rather he cried or expressed sadness more readily to get it out rather than holding it in. It has been a hard year for everyone including our kids.

My now 16 year old did cry at 11 when he was really frustrated (with me or something that he couldn’t do). I worried a bit about it then but he’s stopped as he’s gotten older. He expresses his frustration now by talking about it....or yelling about it!

As someone who is a crier, it is a self fulfilling prophecy for me sometimes. The more I don’t want to do it, the more it seems to happen. Crying can be even more shameful for boys.

Ask the therapist for tips on this. Also, talk about it openly with your son. Crying shouldn’t be shameful.

What helped me was a year of therapy and 10mg daily w Lexapro. I just had an incident where I typically would have cried but didn’t feel out of control and it finally didn’t happen after 45+ years. It was chemical for me. It just is for some people.
