3 row SUV with captains chairs, NO MINIVAN

Anonymous
My friend has a Honda Pilot. My spouse (5'11") and I (5'9") recently rode in the 3rd row and it was comfy. I assume, but don't know, that captains chairs in the second row are available.

OP here: driving mostly around town, stop and go traffic, but def occasionally highway/parkway riding

Palisade or telluride. Both have very nice interiors

Following! 3 kids (9, 11, 13) & dog. Currently in a 2018 highlander (lease). Considering atlas, Subaru. We’re a ski racing, soccer, lacrosse, baseball family. Always dragging stuff around. Don’t want to go huge (suburban) due to poor gas mileage (frequent road trips). Also don’t want to rely on roof storage. Considering a Sienna too!

VW Atlas is huge inside. Adults can sit and access the third row comfortably with the captains chairs

I love my 2021 Sienna.

What are your cargo requirements? Do your kids play sports that require a lot of bulky stuff (like hockey)? Do you/will you participate in a car pool? Does your family ski locally? Do you have a dog?

Do you street park on a regular basis?

Do you need to tow anything?

My 3 kids ski raced for YEARS (plus soccer, etc. ) and the AWD Sienna was the best vehicle for it. Got us to the mountain even on the day when they ended up canceling races because there was too much snow. I was excited to check out the 2021s but after seeing how much less cargo space there is, will stick with my old one.

Pilot design is old and will be replaced next year.

I have a Highlander with captains chairs and LOVE it.

Tesla Model X 6 seater. No contest. Closest thing to a minivan without being a minivan!

Friend that skis a lot and has 3 kids loves the Atlas. It actually has a comfy 3rd row for roadtrips and that will be useful or kids your age plus there's enough trunk space for all the gear behind that third row.

I test drove both the Atlas and the new Explorer and liked both a lot.

How about a full size van instead of minivan? If I could go back, I'd have gotten a mercedes sprinter and have the interior fitted with luxury captains chairs. I think the overall functionality, extra space, and towing capacity trump concerns about its size and reliability.
