positive experiences with Paragard IUD?

Anonymous
I know you asked for positive experiences - and many have had them; I just would issue one caution: If you feel any sort of pelvic pain in the weeks after getting it, even if it doesn't seem like it could be related (like in your buttocks area), get it checked. If you have a retroverted uterus it could cause those types of problems with it.

It's only been 2 weeks but so far I love my Paragard. Insertion was a breeze (it helps if your provider has done a lot of them), I took 600mg of ibuprofen about an hour before and only had really minor cramping during and right after the insertion. Had some light spotting for about 3 days, and that's it! I'm still breastfeeding so no period yet, but so far so good.

Did insertion hurt?

I had one before pregnancy and that insertion hurt as bad as labor (just not as long and drawn out). I had such bad cramping, nearly fainted in the office, and spent 24-48 hours on percocet. I had very bad cramps every month and long, heavy periods. I had it taken out after about 1.5 years and got pregnant one month later. After I had my baby, I had a mirena put in and hated it so much because of the hormonal side effects (nausea, decreased milk supply, anxiety) that I had it removed and a new paragard inserted a few weeks later. Insertion post partum was an absolute breeze (for both mirena and paragard). I've had two periods since getting the paragard and they're totally fine: minimal cramping, last 4 days, moderate to heavy flow. I'm very happy with the paragard now that my uterus has been stretched out after having a baby. Oh, also, I had a c-section (but dilated to 9 cm) and my insertion still didn't hurt (i've heard it can be worse if you don't have a vaginal delivery).

I have had my ParaGard for 10 years and couldn't be happier with it. In fact, as I'm approaching menopause, I have been researching it and reading that newer research says it's safe and effective for 12 years... I'm hoping it will see me through "the change." The IUD had no appreciable effect on my periods, which remained regular until recently (but that's age-related, I believe). It's been the best non-surgical solution for me and my husband. I am happy not to have been on the pill for 10 years...

Now, they are very close to what they were like before. I also liked that you are immediately fertile upon removal. My doctor never mentioned that with Mirena, it can take a few months to get full fertility back.

This is similar to my experience. I have had my paragard for almost a year now. I love it. I was expecting to have increased menstrual cramps with the paragard, but this has not been the case. My periods are longer and heavier than before, with each period noticeably shorter adn less heavy than the one before.

Insertion was very uncomfortable for about 5 minutes, with an hour of heavy cramping afterwards. Moderate cramping for the next day. That was after 2 vaginal deliveries for me.

I had a IUD put in today and it was no pain at all didn't even realize Dr was done. It was quick and easy I am a mother of two, I have a eight year old daughter and five month old son. I took four Motrin before appointment and am fine I did some cramping a hour later but other than that I have no compliants.

I have had my paraguard in for about 6 mos now and love it! I chose it over mirena because I was still bf and didn't want the hormones to interfere. Insertion was uncomfortable, but as my OB put it, you had a natural childbirth, I don't want to hear any whining! I was very, very crampy for a few hours after. Differences in periods are hard to tell because my period didn't come back until AFTER I had the IUD inserted, so I don't know if the changes are due to baby or IUD, KWIM? Pre-baby, average to light periods, no cramping, no PMS except for fatigue 24 hours or so before start. Now... I spot really, really, really lightly for 3-4 days before AF really shows up (but it's kinda nice, like a warning signal or something). First 2-3 days are REALLY heavy, but still no cramping. Not longer at all.
Another reason I can't really tell the difference is PP I switched from tampons to a menstrual cup, which is fabulous, but it just makes things... I dunno... feel different. I would totally do it again in a heartbeat though!
Having been on hormonal BCP for 10 years (including nuvaring) previously, I really didn't realize that maybe it was interfering with my libido. We DTD more frequently now

I have had my Paragard for about 6 months. I previously had the Mirena before having it removed to try to get pregnant. After having our DD, I had the Paragard inserted. The Paragard has caused me to have MUCH heavier and longer periods (with the Mirena, I had one period and then no more periods at all but, though I loved the convenience of no period, was 'weirded' out by the possibility of being pregnant and not knowing). With the first period, I soaked through a Super tampon and through my dress (thank God I was at home and not out in public). Now that I know to wear a Super plus a pad & to change often, things are manageable. Other than the heavy, long period, I like the Paragard. I have not had any cramps at all. I like that I am starting to get my libido back and don't feel like hormones that were in other contraception are making me a Wicked Witch.

Good luck with your decision!

CLARIFICATION: Above, I was referring to my first period with the Paragard where I soaked through my dress.

May be old but still informative. I'm 50, have had 6 kids naturally and am researching paragard. Glad to have found some positive feedback after all the horror stories. I'll be back to post how things have gone for me.

I know this is a old comment but would like to learn more if the PP is around! I do have a retroverted uterus, recently had the Paragard inserted, and my dr did not mention anything . . .
