Is my kid reading too much into this note?

OP: I know nothing about any of this, but it sounds promising to me. I have a senior waiting on pins and needles as well. I also have a sophomore who is hoping to be recruited, and I am reallys surprised she heard from a coach cold--that does not sound typical, so I would read promise into it. Good luck!

OP here. She decided to reply to his note to express her passion for the sport and willingness to play, and to ask about whether his note was generic or a promising sign. I guess we'll know soon.

It has been such a hard time to know where and how to apply. I really hope this works out for her, as it would give her both a school and a sense of community.

Good luck and please keep us posted! My older two are playing sports in college, one at the club level and the other as a recruited athlete. It definitely makes it easy to find a great community, and it’s hugely helpful in lessening the amount of academic stress kids feel.

I have no idea if it means she will be accepted, but I do know it shows the school takes care in ensuring prospective students are paid attention to. I'd givthe school props for this!

I hope your DD gets accepted. With my DC, some schools definitely are more attentive and personal than others and it make a huge difference to DC and to us. It really varies. by school, and it is NOT just the desperate schools that are doing this. Some great T25 are also making the effort.

I'll be monitoring, OP. Let us know what happens.

Did your DD ever contact the coach via email before this recent letter? If not, the coach wouldn’t know anything about your DD’s abilities. I am not confident this note means anything, it doesn’t necessarily mean bad news, just not good news.

My kid got a similar note from a coach at a very top DC private in the span between when the applications were due and when results came out. It turned he/she was accepted.

We had no idea what to think and certainly private high school isn't college but who knows. I hope that it's good news for your kid!

That isn't true in all sports. Some individual sports have all of a kids' data easily accessible on line and the coaches just cull the list from parameters they input.

I was going to suggest she reach back, will look forward to updates. Good luck!

Except the application includes the girl's achievements in the sport. A coach would know if these are noteworthy, or not.

Very good sign.

OP again: Just a quick somewhat unfulfilling update. He did write back, rather quickly. His message was nice but essentially a re-worked version of the first email. That he is happy to hear of her interest, hopes to meet her this fall, hopes he has the opportunity to train her, and the university is superb place for the sport because of these reasons. He avoided answering her direct question on admissions.

They release admissions notifications at the end of the month, so she's just going to have to wait it out. But for better or worse, this exchange definitely lifted her spirits and hopes.

The pins and needles this time of year are so sharp. Sending virtual compassion to all the kids (and parents) out there sweating it out this year.

Sounds like the coach asked admissions to let him know if they had any applicants in his sport - maybe even a particular position - and they passed along your kid's name. The coach liked your kid and probably told admissions, hey, if you can make this work, I'd love to have her. It's all good - hope it works out for your DD!

Rooting for your DD OP, keep us posted!

I bet the coach is simply not allowed to relay the acceptance. I would feel pretty good about her chances (quietly!)
