Canada most certainly does not “effectively ban handguns.” There are restrictions (which criminals will never comply with), but non-criminals can buy a handgun if they want to.

As for “hate filled rangers,” the people who misuse firearms are, by and large, members of a criminal subculture whose values (if one can call them that) are wholly inconsistent with existence in a civilized society. One can debate the roots of their criminal sociopathy, but it is beyond cavil that they are sociopaths and many of them are untreatable except by protracted incarceration.

Do you “happen” to know that various types of firearms, including handguns, are readily obtainable in France, albeit with a licensing requirement?

Do you “happen to know” that firearm suppressors (“silencers”) also are readily obtainable in France?

Do you “happen to know” that European gun laws are not uniform. Icelanders own one gun for every three people. The Czech Republic has “shall issue” handgun permits. Every country in the European Union makes at least some provision for citizen firearm ownership. In Italy, the number of firearms an individual may own and retain in their home is limited to three common handguns, twelve sporting handguns or long guns, and an unlimited number of hunting long guns.

One could go on and on, but the point is clear that however “very strict” you may think European firearm laws are, it is a complete confabulation to assert that “almost no one owns a gun” there. Plenty of people have legal firearms and plenty more have illegal ones, such as the AK47’s used by terrorists in various attacks.

Apparently you do not know as much about Europe as you think you do. Switzerland is famous for it liberal gun laws. Everybody has a gun. Everybody is trained in firearms as well, so that helps. But stop quoting made up Euro standards.

The problem with a lot of these anti-gun commenters in this thread is that they know enough to have an opinion, but not enough to have an educated opinion. Switzerland’s gun laws being conflated with Europe’s is an example. Another is their habit of conflating “semi-automatic” with “automatic” and not knowing the difference between cartridges and bullets.

You would think people would be a little more cautious about arguing about an issue when they can’t even get the basic facts straight.

They are making an emotional argument and not a logical or fact based argument. Emotions are powerful and often time cloud thinking. Humans were designed that way.

I think it’s deeper than that actually.

It’s a combination of their awareness of their own lack of self control, AND projection.

I know many liberals and progressives who oppose gun ownership because they themselves are prone to fits of extreme rage, often manifest in violent outbursts. On many occasions I’ve heard them flippantly say things like “If I had a gun I would’ve shot him/her/them right then and there!” . And they project that mindset onto everyone else - because remember- they are normal, as they see themselves. Not potentially violent yet sort of in control psychos. So they assume everyone else feels the same rage they do when someone cuts them off in traffic or has a yard sign they don’t like. And they’re self-aware enough to know if they DID have a gun, they’d use it the next time they got mad. Therefore they choose not to own a gun. And they also want to make sure no one else can either. Because everyone else must be as potentially violent as them..... right?
