If a "smaller" SUV is what you are after, also take a look at the Mercedes GLB. The GLB is based on the same chassis and engine as the GLA, but is designed to be aligned with more of the traditional boxy/smooth Mercedes SUV design, kind of a modern extension of the old ML design, but smaller, of course. |
These looks super nice. I'd love to hear about it if someone has experience with this car. |
the downside is Ford quality and all that entails |
OP we had q5 2107 and have Q5 2020. Love the ride and I mean love. 2017 had no issues in the 3 years besides basic oil change. 2020 don't want to jinx it but so far so good. I will say the Lexus reliability can not be beaten. The Audi's reliability is way better than it was but it will not be anywhere near Lexus. |
I had a jeep Cherokee overland that was fairly luxurious. Definitely on par with an rx. |
| Get the Mercedes GLC over the glb. Glb is same as GLa. |
They are not really the same. It's the same platform and engine, yes, but the vehicles are very different in terms of their design goals. The GLB, for example, seats 7 people and is only one inch shorter than the GLC. The GLC is indeed nicer but a new one is coming in 2022 that will bring with it all of the next-gen platform and technology updates. The current-gen GLC's technology package is one generation behind the GLB/GLA, both of which are brand new for 2021. Many people, including myself, have terrible opinions of the first-generation GLA. This does *NOT* apply to the current GLA, and certainly not to the GLB. All in all, the OP should just go check one out as long as he/she is at the MB dealership. |
| Honestly- go test drive a BMW X3. I was sold on getting an Acura RDX but drove off the lot with the x3 instead. It's luxurious in Comfort mode and overall so fun to drive. |
OP again. I mentioned the X3 as my top two options right now. I just can't get beyond the 4 cylinder turbo engine after driving a V6. Not sure I can afford the M model. I need power; get up and go without hesitation. There is hesitation in the drive. With my old Lexus has great kick --even at 200k miles. |
| Audi owner here. I've never had my Audi break down on me. I am very good about taking it in for scheduled service when it says it needs it though. It comes with a 4yr/50k warranty, and you can pre-pay the scheduled service at the time of purchase (this means you can roll it into your loan) if you like. |
| I'm on my second X3 (2020). Had the prior one for 7 years. Love them. Downside is that service is super expensive once you're out of warranty. |
DP (I’m the original love my X3) I was actually deciding between that and the Q5 too, trunk size was one of my top factors which ruled out the comparable MBs for me. My last three cars were V6s of various size (Accord to Buick Enclave) and I am really happy with the power of the X3. You might enjoy sport mode, I almost always use comfort. Another idea - You could try a gently used X5 (V6) for less than an X3 M. |
Oh, and I’ll add re: reliability, my BIL has had the X5 about 5y with no issues |
OP again. Drove the Volvo xc60 and it was kind of nice. Thanks for clarifying all of this re Mercedes. I can't wait til 2022 to buy a car unless the 2022's are out next month.
