E-mail says students and staff can't log in from abroad

You know what would be reasonable? Opening the damn schools. If they don’t want to open the schools and insist that virtual learning is the same as in person then they can deal with people being abroad

Another layer of red tape for anyone trying to take a trip to Hawaii for an extended spring break it looks like.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone knows what prompted this? Was their a cyber security threat and a large number of folks logging in from abroad?

Boohoohoo, I'm sorry you have to reschedule your Hawaii vacation.

Hmm. I was under the impression that Hawaii was part of the US.

The OP states continental US.

I get cyber purposely keeps people in the dark about threats but come on people... pandemic, vaccines, new president.

Can you explain what this means? I don't really understand anything about tech or cyber security. How does logging in to school from another country or Hawaii make things vulnerable?

Wow did dc receive this recommendation?? It's interesting to hear this when teachers were prohibited from using ZOOM due to cyber security risks. Microsoft Teams SUCKS!!

Yes there have been some recent issues of student accounts getting hacked and disruptions happening in classes (I teach at the HS level and had to deal with this in my class). I assumed this was the school needing to add you to a whitelist so you can get access from your location.

Interesting! I remember reading news articles about this right when DL started but didn't realize this was still going on. It happens when people are abroad? Or students even had to do that from their homes?

Citizens in many other countries have no right to privacy. If you bring your laptop and log in from abroad there is a good chance a state sponsored entity will have access to all content on your laptop or communicating through your connect. I for one don’t want a foreign actor recording my child when in class just so that’s you can go on vacation.

Staff really should be required to stay in district in a location that is conducive to a good virtual teaching experience. I keep hearing reports of teachers teaching class form the beach making the sound quality awful for the students. This is your job. Students should not be accommodating your beach vacation.

As to why Hawaii (and presumably, Alaska) are excluded, I wonder if it's because internet connection from those states involves connections to foreign networks (like, does an Alaskan connection to a network in the contiguous US go through Canada? Does a Hawaiian connection go through some other country's cables?). It might also be a an internet quality issue.

Erm, I doubt this is happening with the majority of public school teachers but OK. Yes, there have been teachers on social media showing that they are teaching from other places but they teach for private online companies like VIP Kid.

I do see a problem with physically teaching from the beach due to noise. But teaching from your beach house? Who cares?

They are dealing with people abroad. Fill out the form with your AP and get access approved. I’m glad there is some modicum of security. Who knows where these people are and who has access to their computers?

The beach would be quieter than my home when the landscapers service our complex every Thursday unless it’s pouring rain.
