Teacher Question: Concurrent Teaching and Supervising Other Students

Yeah, asynchronous hybrid is definitely not on offer in Maryland. The State Board of Education has come out with mandatory minutes of synchronous instruction that must be met daily.

They all get virtual instruction. Period. You can’t make it work otherwise. Do not bend over backward to make the impossible happen. You do not take home two salaries.

Catholic school teacher here. Parochial schools have been doing this all year. It doesn't work. The administration makes is look and sound good but it's been a disaster. My class schedule and student roster has shifted 3 times already this school year. Students are frustrated. Nothing more than glorified daycare.

Really? are parents happy, though? People are holding up private schools as models of being able to do this well all year.

Outside of the DC area, one large district I’m aware of has all students that elected for the virtual model taught by a centralized team. They call it the virtual learning academy, but it appears they aren’t teaching the same standards as those in the classroom. The students at school are there 4 days/week and the fifth day they are home for virtual specials (when the virtual academy students join in).

Teaching students in school and at home is nearly impossible, with the added challenge of others in your classroom. Good luck, 3 1/2 months until summer... let’s hope everything is back to normal this fall.

Parents are happy their kids aren't their responsibility. If learning happens, it's a bonus.

Also catholic school teacher here, sounds like the other school doesn’t have a successful plan. My students are learning and things are going well.

My best friend sent her sons (private) for socialization because the private has class sizes maxed out at 8 and relaxes social distancing for lunch, recess, and PE. Her boys already had COVID so she’s not worried about them catching it. She was very worried about her family’s harmony and the damage her sons were doing to her house.

You can contract Covid more than once.

Well, this school year, the model has been open and didn’t kill people. So, low bar.

I'm a teacher and have already planned to quit if this request is made of me. Good luck.

I would call the union, if you belong, because this is the kind of thing that they address. You are not allowed to send a mass parent email without admin approval, but you can tell your students (several times) the facts of the matter, in a non-judgmental tone, that this is the situation, and hope the kids tell their parents. You can tell the PTA under the guise of seeing if they have resources to support you (maybe you need extra money for pencils in case too many kids forget theirs). You can ask the head of your subject area at Gatehouse for tips on how to best provide instruction for your subject u set these conditions. And I would absolutely call your School Board member and alert them to this and explain that this is why there is a teacher shortage. They will keep your name confidential.

It's so interesting to hear it from the other side because all we hear about on DCUM is how private school is so much better and the kids are getting this great education blah blah blah and really it's a hot mess

This would definitely make me quit. I agree with the suggestion to just do class virtually if quitting isn’t an option. Just sit at a desk far away from the students and have the students in person join the virtual lesson.
