Did anyone else drink a small amount while pregnant?

If a third of a glass of wine 5 times over the course 6 months could harm a fetus, then the human race would have died out a long time ago.

This.

And the rates of disability among adults 40 and over would be through the roof, given how frequently women in those generations and older drank while pregnant.

I hope everyone who’s sanctimonious about this issue also exercised daily while pregnant, ate only the most nutrient-dense food, minimized stress, etc.

There is no issue. It's not the alcohol itself that's bad for the baby, it's the "buzz" or oxygen deprivation that could occur. But surely you're not getting a buzz off 1/3 glass, so you're fine.

And I drank 2 cups of coffee a day while pregnant and had no issues. I couldn't cut back because the headaches were unbelievably debilitating- I was vomiting from migraines and such.

This, though I only had two pregnancies. I think the amount you’ve had is almost certainly 109% safe but the bright line rules was easier for me and it seemed like if I couldn’t go 9 months without drinking, that in itself was a problem (for me, not the baby!).

This is what pregnant women should be focusing on. So many are stressed to the max and are incredibly anxious. The stress levels really need to be looked at.

Seems like maybe this question wasn’t for you then.

We had a lot of trouble conceiving our first and I thought I was barren. Well turns out I wasn't. And I ended up just regular drinking (a glass or two of wine with friends on the weekends) and GETTING BOTOX during the first weeks of my 2nd pregnancy because I wasn't aware!
I was an borderline annoying careful in my first pregnancy too.

I didn't drink at all in the first trimester, in large part because the smell of both wine and coffee made me nauseous (along with a million other things). But we took a trip to Italy at the end of the second trimester, and I did have a few half-glasses of wine with meals while we were there. And I didn't feel guilty about it, either.

If you're going to do it, you shouldn't beat yourself up about it. If it's something you're going to feel guilty about, then don't do it. If you've decided, based on the evidence and discussions with your OB, that it's fine, then don't feel guilty about it.

Right? All the sanctimony, forgetting that huge swaths of the human race drank alcohol when pregnant, for centuries. Drinking to excess is obviously not healthy. But in many times and places, women drank small beer and the like regularly. The reason they advise pregnant women not to drink is because (1) they don't think we can handle a nuanced message or they think that women who drink too much always think they are drinking "moderately" or whatever and (2) they can't ethically run trials to determine what a safe level of alcohol consumption is.

Also, you should add to the list of things that the sanctimommies should have avoided: driving or riding in a car. Lots of evidence that that can be VERY dangerous for the fetus.

PP you’re quoting, and the one thing I’ll add around the public health messaging is that there are plenty of women who can’t drink moderately, and so they need that bright line of no drinking at all. But then you have people who don’t understand that dynamic and use it as an opportunity to shame women who drink very small amounts.

I had one sip of champagne on our anniversary and just did not taste right to me. But you better believe I was pumping and dumping once that baby shout out!

Pumping and dumping isn't a thing for alcohol reduction in breastmilk...unless you were doing it to maintain supply/relieve engorgement.
