Jack Evan’s car stolen from outside his home today?

Why doesn't MPD leave a car running with keys, and do that thing where it locks/stops when driven away and then they can talk thru the radio and force the thieves to surrender hands up (all on video). Since for every running car there seems to be a thief handy, seems like they could all quickly be apprehended + charged this way. Then they could go to a warm jail cell (Charles Allen thinks some of DC car thieves are seeking warmth, according to his letter to constituents).

There was a reality show entirely of this, Bait Car. God I loved that show!

Yes, someone described it to me (that show) and it sounds like it needs a revival in DC? So what's up with the new DC "car theft task force" anyway?

Does the car theft task force actually exist? It was announced and all we have heard since then is to not leave valuables in our cars and to not leave the engine idling. Is the task force one under paid civilian employee writing car safety tips between coffee runs for the detectives? Anybody have their social media links?

Nope. I don’t. I actually don’t care - residential burglaries and home invasions are down across the city. If you’re stupid enough to leave your car running with the keys in on a public street - whatever.

Ummm...because everybody is in their homes. Little thing called a pandemic. You aren't actually attempting to claim that crime has gone down are you? You live your life in a vacuum. Have a great day.

You think all home invasions were victimless crimes pre-pandemic?

How have TWO Councilmembers (ok, one former) done this in the past year?! Just turn the damn car off and take the keys like a normal person!

Ummm.... the jokes on you people

let's think- paid off car with little re-sale value gets " stolen"

hmmm........

You people are so eager to look down on a wealthy council member that you seem to miss the underlying...

who is is dumber ? You, or the guy who - on cue- steels the car

I heard the way they discovered that Evans's car was stolen is that it was legally parked.

I think the person who is dumber is the guy who describes a theft as "steels." But that's just me.

This theory really doesn't seem very smart. If the car's old, the insurance payment can't be more than a couple thousand right? Would a council member risk the fallout of being caught in such a scheme for that amount? When there is grift it is on a much larger scale.

Should we start a GoFundMe?

NP. You're both wrong. It's the person who spells the name "Evans" as "Evan's."

And you are forgetting the claim on the valuables inside

There should be a law against wasting police time and taxpayer money:

If your car get stolen because you left it unattended with the engine running and the key in the ignition, TOO BAD. We wash your hands off you.

I find it a little strange how cool my fellow washington DC'ers are with being crime victims. Whoever stole Evans car would have gone on to the next opp- maybe smashing in the window of a locked car or maybe hitting someone over the head. Beyond the snark, lets focus on the fact that apparently there are way too many miscreants out on the stroll. All this snark reminds me of telling women to cover up so they wont "tempt" men.
