I know you said secular but I wanted to give you more options and all of the schools are seeing a huge uptick in applications. There are also several much smaller privates in the area. The above list are the larger ones.

The school board is voting soon about re-opening. Elementary would go back 4 days a week and middle-Hugh school would go 2 days a week.

Western Alb public schools are hugely overcrowded due to a boom of new housing and no plan for new schools. We’re in the north feeder pattern and our schools are seeing the same. Again there is no active conversation about new schools.

Feel free to ask me more questions if you have them.

Thank you! You are so lucky to live there. It is heavenly. Would you mind saying a little bit about why STAB seems so much more popular than Miller? I don’t think I understand what differentiates them.

Is Tandem super hippy-dippy? I love my kale, but this year has exhausted my patience with the super woke, virtue signaling crowd.

Why is it heavenly? Sincerely curious. Maybe we should move!

I’m op. It’s heavenly because it’s gorgeous. People are more chill. There is amazing food everywhere (better food scene) and everything you could want in dc culturally on a mini-scale. A winery around every corner. An educated population that has a more artistic bent than miserable dc lawyers. More f* you money there than in dc (per capita), which is interesting. I am itching to make it a first home rather than a second home . . . DCPS’s utter failure may make push us into Charlottesville’s arms.

Do you have a job?

I grew up in Charlottesville and find it has changed considerably. I used to miss it, but do not any more. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a great place for relocation depending on what you are looking for. It is probably the relocations that have changed the character of the place.

STAB is near the wealthier areas and is the logical target for that set. It used to be two separate schools for males and females. Miller is remote. Although someone said it is in Crozet, it is actually halfway between Crozet and Batesville, which is a really rural place with a store and a post office (at least it used to have a store and a post office). Miller School also has a different history, starting off as a school for orphans, being male only for quite a while. It is kind of on its third incarnation now. Tandem used to be the more liberal option. Covenant is a Christian school.

I went to Charlottesville High and loved it.

No clue but wanted to say that I absolutely love that area.

STAB is an excellent school and so is Covenant. I would prefer STAB if I lived there. Would send my youngest in a heartbeat.

Yes, but own businesses etc. so flexible about where live (as long as reasonable airport available).

I grew up in a small VA town and went to UVA and I think you’re exaggerating.

I agree. Went to school at UVA and it's a great college town but that's about the extent of it.

OP — I live in Cville, and while we really like it (relocated from NOVA for a job - but had attended school there long ago), the airport leaves a lot to be desired if time matters to you. COVID has really cut our direct flights. And even non COVID, you are looking at connections to any place other than NY, Chicago, Charlotte, and Atlanta — and those are limited. I don’t travel much, but have been really delayed each time I have. Many friends drive to DC to save the hassle. It is a great town, but it isn’t easy to get to, if that matters.

Then you probably didn’t get much further than the corner. The university area is the least of what Albemarle county offers IMHO.

There are certainly parts of Charlottesville that offer less, but I agree with Albemarle Country. Beautiful as you get outside of Charlottesville.

DP: We're thinking of retiring there. What areas would you look in for a couple that wants to be near Farmington Golf?

I also went to school there, fell in love with Charlottesville and stuck around for a few years after graduation, but the small town/fishbowl aspect started to wear on me in my 20s. Moved away, but always thought I’d return someday forever. I hardly recognize it anymore. Yes, the areas surrounding it are beautiful, but I can enjoy that on weekend getaways. The city itself is just a little too precious and full of itself. It’s a shame because I still don’t know where to land for good.

I didn't go to UVA, but grew up there and thought I might return some day. But I don't feel any particular attachment any more when I visit. I think the attraction is to people who are tired of the daily slog in NOVA.

Good luck being accepted if you move there. If you think it's hard for outsiders to move to Richmond and break into that bubble, good luck with Charlottesville.

Don't say I didn't warn you.
