Its not a jerk thing to do. You need to be responsible and get your work in. Teach your kids this now. He probably makes a rare exception but there is no excuse to get in assignments late and if you need to you contact the professor and talk to them. |
| My kids do not go to UMCP but have heard from many parents that their students are doing better at Maryland than they did in High School. It obviously is not easier but students are have risen to the occasion. Most of these kids started off freshman connection, science (pre-med), business, communications majors. Very happy to hear this for them. |
OP here- that’s wonderful to hear. |
Seriously. I agree. It is totally reasonable for a college professor to expect to receive assignments on time and penalize students for turning work in late. How in the world do you think real life works? |
Yeah, it is a jerk thing to do to mark the work late at 12:01 am when it's due at 12:00 am. |
50% of MCPS grads end up back at Montgomery College |
1) All of this was true when I attended UMCP 20 years ago. Every single point, including no acceptance of late assignments. 2) These are generally true of other competitive schools, public and private. |
PP you are responding to. Why would you say that? You think college should be extended-high school or middle school? Maybe your kid is not ready for college then. |
Maybe you can explain your thought process other than saying the same thing. Why do you think one min late is not late? |
A few pointers from an advisor/ instructor: *take a reasonable course load, especially first couple years *take a summer class to stay on track for credits *consider winter-term for same reason, but know that coursework is very condensed, fast-paced *there will be general education classes you don’t love, but be sure you’re happy in your major. Pick your major for yourself and your goals *meet with instructors early and often, especially if you are struggling. That’s what we’re here for! *eat, sleep, exercise and have some down time

Lol. Okay |
| This thread is from 2021. The students who were accepted to UMD in the Spring of 2021 have probably graduated or will soon. Do those students or their families have any piece of advice or "in retrospect" comments? |
Source? |
My ds said it was hard to study for finals - he was not used to them. He also had to adjust to the amount of reading that was required. He was better prepared for calc at UMD, but he did take a dual enrollment class at MC as high school senior. |
Beautifully! STEM major. 2024 MCPS grad and can graduate December 2026. Thanks MC2! |
