Ahm.. if you know history the way you think you do then you would probably have problems with many many many many more people that you probably don't have problem with. And again. DECOR forum not POLITICS forum. |

Agree. It is almost impossible not to think about the owners and focus solely in the decor. Maybe if OP had just presented it as an example of the period. But once you throw in the Duke/Duchess, it becomes tied to them and their story - including the Nazi leanings.
And the kitchen was likely in the basement or connected out back. They had servants, you know. No need to cook for themselves. |
Love DCUM. |
I wondered this, too. He abdicated for her, which people thought was very romantic. And then they ended up living in exile, alienated from family, dependent on an allowance, without children, and were Nazi sympathizers who got shunted off to the Bahamas (which they hated) during WWII because people didn't trust them. The house itself isn't at all to my taste -- too cold, too fussy, too many portraits of her -- but I loved the note that you can get pug pillows like hers from Etsy! Truly, elegance personified. |
Then why did you emphasize their personal lives so much? Why keep doubling down on how it really was a "fairytale"?
Would you even care about this house if it wasn't the Windsors'? You didn't make one single substantive comment about the actual decor. |
Jeff, could you please move this thread to Pop Culture already?...
|
| The house is gorgeous! |
| Some of it looks very grand-millennial in style, esp with those Etsy pug pillows. I like the bedroom and his bathroom and some of the individual pieces but much of it is really stuffy. It’s funny how much of it is back in though, including the gold trim stuff, those comfy velvet chairs, some of the rattan look stuff. |
Yes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_route_du_Champ_d%27Entraînement Homes built at this time for that level of wealth had the kitchen nowhere near the main floor, generally speaking. “Behind the green baize door” is more English, but the same rules apply in terms of keeping cooking and all that day to day stuff somewhere else. |

1. I genuinely like their decorating for the most part. Yeah, it’s a bit much to put your own portrait on the wall, but eh. 2. I hate pugs, I cannot imagine living with the grumbling little beasts and decorating a bedroom in that theme is vomit worthy to me. 3. “Nazi sympathizers” is actually being a bit generous. Wallis may have had an affair with a Nazi, and Edward I believe made plans with the Nazis to be reinstalled as king. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/12/30/fact-checking-the-crown-did-the-duke-of-windsor-plot-with-hitler-to-betray-britain/
That said, Wallis never wanted to marry him, nor did she want him to give up the throne. She enjoyed having a close affair with the King, but she didn’t want all the rest of it. |
She cheated on him non-stop and didn't want to marry him. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-jan-30-fg-simpson30-story.html https://nypost.com/2018/02/10/wallis-simpsons-marriage-to-edward-viii-was-shockingly-miserable/ |
| I normally love this stuff but this didn't really do it for me. I do think the dining room is stunning. |
Agree with this. Plenty of racists and pro-colonialists in history, yet they get a free pass... |
Not here they wont. |
It's horrid. It's not 'enchanting' in the least and there's little warmth or personality - other than the dog pillows. It does, however, succeed in communicating their vision of themselves as wealthy and important. |
